Dmophon Overture Wind Band Set (Score & Parts) - Takahashi, Tohru

Cherubini made his Paris debut with Dmophon, which premiered in 1788. Tohru Takahashi has arranged this dramatic overture for concert band, with specific parts for oboe, bassoon and saxophone among others. Toccata Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L'Orfeo (1607). According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintet consisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect. 0:02:00

Academic Festival Overture Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Fesival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humor, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overture is still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition. 0:09:50

Ross Roy Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the "St. Peters Wind Symphony" from Brisbane, Australia. "Ross Roy" is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the "Ross Roy" as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics. The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of "Tempo di Marcia". This movement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of "passing through" the classes up to the final examinations. Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding. We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the "overture" to the rest of one's life. The premiere of "Ross Roy" was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997. 0:09:19
