Souvenir Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
In 1906 Bohemian violinist and composer Frantisek Drdla (1868-1944) composed the delightfully charming piece entitled Souvenir. This piece for violin and piano is one of the most popular compositions by Drdla. Wil van der Beek has produced this arrangement for Flute and Concert Band which remains faithful to the original version. Extra Score. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band. Variations on a French Folksong (Wind Band - Score and Parts)
The variation form is one of the oldest and most fundamental forms of musical technique. Franco Cesarini has chosen the well known French folk melody, Sur le pont d'Avignon as the basis for this piece. The piece begins with a short introduction followed by the exposition and ten lively and contrasting variations. The final reminder of the main theme also included references to the famous French nursery songs J'ai du bon tabac and Alouette, which bring the work to an expressive and brilliant close.Duration7:00

One of the members of The Salvation Army's 1960s phenomenon "The Joystrings," Joy Webb has a string of popular songs to her name, several of which contributed to the charts successes of enjoyed by the group. In more recent years, many of her tunes have found their why into instrumental repertoire.A prime example of Joy's remarkable gifting is her beautiful Share My Yoke. Although the deeply spiritual words of Share My Yoke may be unfamiliar to some, the sheer beauty of the melody is without doubt. According to Viking mythology, following a battle the bravest souls of the slain would be divided between two Gods, Odin and Freyja. Freyja was the Goddess of Love and War and before going into battle many Viking warriors would pray that they would die bravely so that Freyja would take their soul to join her personal army made up of the souls of the bravest of men.'Freyja's Call' describes one of these, a young Scottish soldier, going into battle as part of the Viking army who occupied parts of Scotland for four centuries. First, a slow theme is heard, Freyja's theme, which is the soldier praying to Freyja to keep a watch on him. Then the drums introduce a new rhythm which announces the beginning of the battle.A Celtic Jig is used to describe the progress of the battle with the jig played quietly at first then gradually louder with more percussion being added until a full ff section signifies the soldier fighting the enemy directly.Suddenly, the music drops back to the quiet Jig theme. The soldier has been slain, but will he be chosen by Frejya? After a short time, Freyja's theme is heard as the brave soldier is taken to Freyja's heavenly army of brave warriors, and the piece then ends in triumph.
