Weather Report - Shin'ya Takahashi
Weather Report was commissioned by Marunouchi Junior High School in Nagano in 2010 and premiered at the Nagano State Band Contest.One of my new thoughts for composition has been to ask students for titles, images and ideas. For this commission I collected many interesting concepts, and quite a few had to do with weather. So, I constructed the piece based on weather news and report. After the main weather news presentation, the meteorologist presents the daily weather forecast:"The morning will be clear and beautiful becoming cloudy at noon and eventually shower later. Rain intensity will increase turning into a thunderstorm. Towards the evening, rain and storm will leave, and there will be a beautiful sunset. That's the weather for today."(Shin'ya Takahashi)

In the somewhat sarcastic Scherzpolka (Joke Polka), the composer does not intend to make fun of Alpine traditions and music but rather of the typical social attitude that does not always do justice to the valuable folk music and culture. Imagine a band that has to play in a beer tent for hours. During the performance the guests treat the musicians to one beer after another. Gradually, the players and the conductor lose control over their instruments and their interpretation of the music. Finally, the performance comes to an end: the Scherzpolka is actually the last piece. There are no limits to the creativity in both the visual and musical aspects during a performance of theScherzpolka!

This composition describes a landscape in the Upper Austrian region of Mhlviertel. This area was once besieged by the Celts, who spread fear and terror among the inhabitants, however the people opposed the enemy with patience and courage. Theiruncompromising love of life demonstrated how unyielding they were and finally, the Celts had to withdraw from Mhlviertel. The region is still one of the most beautiful landscapes in Austria, and the people who live there are proof that tradition andprogress are not necessarily contradictory.
