Songs from Across the Water was commissioned by Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds - Phil Evans, Founder and Director. Phil Evans hails from the UK and served for 25 years in the Band of HM Royal Marines. Now resident in the USA he founded Pennsylvania Symphonic Winds in 2008, giving them the tag line 'An American Band with a British Accent', as he wanted to combine the best of both countries' band traditions. With this in mind, composer Philip Sparke decided to create a suite of British folk songs, scored with an American influence to fulfil the philosophy of the band's tag line. The three movements, which are played without a break, are based onthe following folk songs, which come from all corners of the British Isles: 'The Three Ravens & The Cruiskeen Lawn', 'The Lark in the Clear Air' and 'The Piper o' Dundee & Men of Harlech'.

Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month.This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band.Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies willmake a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Children of a Different Sun - Roland Barrett
Opening with a heroic fanfare, this stunning original composition was inspired by the 15th century Inca citadel Machu Picchu and specifically the Intihuatana stone in what is now southeastern Peru where sun worship was favored. Many historians have come to refer to the Inca Empire as "Children of the Sun." The work continues with an intense, almost frenzied, component that sets the stage for an active interplay of contrasting themes featuring a melodic statement interrupted by accented percussive statements. A pensive and lush moment builds with strong percussion contribution to a bold and satisfying conclusion. (4:45)

Johan Svendsen (1840 - 1911) was the first great Norwegian symphonic composer, as well as one of the leading conductors of his time. Next to Edv. Grieg, he was the most prominent figure in Norwegian music life at the end of the 1800's. Although he came from humble beginnings in Chistiania (now Oslo), he was to become a cosmopolitan who felt at home all over Europa. Svendsen spent most of his adult life abroad, living in Copenhagen for 25 years as maestro for the Royal Theatre Orchestra. Nonetheless he retained contact with Norway troughout these years and was a frequent and popular guest in his native country. He wrote his Festival Polonaise for a ball in 1873. The most beautiful thing is one of Jahn Teigens most popular pop ballads. It was written in 1988 together with Rolf Lvland and Ove Borchstein and went straight to the top of the Norwegian hitlists. Even 20 years after its release, in 2008, it reached the hitlists after Teigen performed it during the Eurovision Song Contest. The song is often played on Norwegian radio and was the 70th most played in the period 1993-2013 on the radio channel P4.
