    In Memoriam - Johan Halvorsen

Johan Halvorsens In Memoriam, Opus 30 was written for the great Norwegian poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson. The two men became very close friends and Halvorsen composed a funeral march in Bjornsons honor upon his death in 1910. The musics link with Bjornson is underscored by the fact that it opens with a paraphrase of the Norwegian national anthem. At the peak, it suddenly falls away, and following a roll of the timpani, the anthem is played in its entirety. Vocal parts sung by members of the ensemble contribute to the overall effect and make this a most memorable and moving work.

Schola Vitae (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sadeler, Georges

Schola Vitae, dedicated to the former director of UGDA Music School in Luxembourg, Paul Scholer, describes in an 8-minute piece that learning and playing music is a school for life. Starting with popular scales that ascend and descend through various keys, an essential tool familiar to every musician appears: the metronome. It sets the tempo, and musicians practice their themes together or against each other, register by register. In music, however, it's not just about technique and precision, but also about emotions. Music connects people, fosters friendships, and accompanies them through the highs and lows of life. The sense of togetherness in music becomes increasingly audible. Everyone works together and pulls in the same direction to ultimately achieve something great.Georges Sadeler, born in 1988 is a Luxembourgish composer and saxophonist with the Grand Ducal Military Band of Luxembourg. His father kindled his interest in composing and arranging at an early age, a study he later continued under his two teachers Marco Ptz and Claude Lenners, both of whom taught at the Conservatoire of Music, Luxembourg. He gradually began to establish his own style, combining the enormous range of possibilities of contemporary music and classical music and, in the years that followed, he won six first prizes at various national and international composition competitions. His works have since been performed all over Europe.Duration: 8.00

The right one depicts mournful Aino weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the mermaids of Vellamo who are playing in the water. The central panel depicts fishing Vainamoinen having thrown away a small fish, which turns out to be Aino, who laughs at him and vanishes forever.Duration: 10.30

General Sherman (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jeanbourquin, Marc

General Sherman is a giant sequoia situated in the Sequoia National Park, in California. The naturalist James Wolverton named it in homage to the famous American general William Tecumseh Sherman. The impressive character of this sequoia inspired the composer, but the introduction could also evoke General Sherman arriving in the distance. Marc Jeanbourquin imagined how this giant could be in all its grandeur, attempting to climb into the foliage to find the light that filters from the top. But energetic passages indicate that the presence of the general is never far. The work concludes with a reminiscence of the initial theme, full of mystery.Duration: 5.15

Written as a powerful sequel to Moscow, 1941, this work changes the narrative, where the theme from Moscow now becomes the aggressor, and the heroic people of Ukraine are represented by the Ukrainian National Anthem and the powerful song "Prayer for Ukraine." Moorside March (from A Moorside Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Wagner, Douglas E.

A Moorside Suite was written in 1928 as a test piece for the National Brass Band Festival championship competition held that year. The three-movement work includes a jaunty "Scherzo," a lovely "Nocturne," and the popular "March," which has enjoyed countless performances since its premiere. Douglas E. Wagner created this arrangement with younger players in mind. Though slightly abridged, the main themes and styles are present in a carefully-crafted performance piece accessible to concert bands at this level. This authentic arrangement still bears Holst's unmistakable musical signature.Duration: 3.30

Norsk Kunstnerkarneval Op.14 (Norwegian Artists' Carnival Op.14) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Svendsen, Johan S. - Nordhagen, Stig

This well-known work was composed in Christiania in 1874 for a burlesque Carnival in Kunstnerforeningen. An early title for the work was Bryllup paa Dovre. The manuscript score and parts at The National Library in Oslo of the early version with this title have much more music than the version printed by C.F. Peters, Leipzig in 1881. The form in this first version was ABA with an additional trio part that later were discarded. In the trio Svendsen used the melody Saeterreisen (Os har gjort kva gjeras skulle) from Lindeman's collection of Norwegian Folk Tunes. (Vol. I/115). In the A-part a wedding tune (Bruraslaatten) from Sogn is used (Lindeman Vol. I/476). The Carnival's literary theme was the connection between the cold north and the warm south. Musically the south is represented in Svendsen's music by Raffaele Sacoo's melody from 1835, Te voglio bene assai.I believe that if Norwegian quality music from this period is going to be performed, it must at least be available. There must be editions for modern instrumentations with full scores. I do this as my contribution to expand and enrich the repertoire for Concert Bands.- Stig Nordhagen
