£95.00The Pageant of London - Frank Bridge
Frank Bridge was one of the finest English composers of the first half of the 20th century. The Pageant of London is his only work for wind band, comprising of two marches, one scored from Bridge's best known organ piece and including the chimes ofBig Ben, plus three short renaissance pastiche items, one arranged from Playford (later used by Peter Warlock in Capriol Suite). The music is tuneful, approachable and, in the words of wind band 'legend' Timothy Reynish makes a fine alternative toHolst's two suites, which were composed around the same time. Reynish has introduced this work to concert bands right across the world. It has been performed in USA and the Far East, recorded by the celebrated Kosei Wind Orchestra of Japan and alsoby the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the Chandos edition of Bridge Orchestral Music.

£252.10Holberg Suite - Edvard Grieg
Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use and development of Norwegian folkmusic in his own compositions put the music of Norway in the international spectrum, as well as helping to develop a national identity. Grieg is regarded as simultaneously nationalistic and cosmopolitan in his orientation, for although born in Bergenand buried there, he traveled widely throughout Europe, and considered his music to express both the beauty of Norwegian rural life and the culture of Europe as awhole.1884 was the bicentenary year of the birth of Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754)and as a part of the celebrations various Scandinavian composers were commissioned to write commemorative pieces. From Holbergs Time was one of Griegs contributions. It was first written for piano but in 1885 the composer transcribed it for stringorchestra. For his suite Grieg went back to some of the musical forms used by Holbergs contemporaries but although the forms and style may be rococo the contents are unmistakably characteristic of Grieg himself. Grieg gave the first performance ofthe piano version in Bergen, Holbergs birthplace, in December 1884.

The author of Kosterflickornas visa "the Song of the Koster Girls" is Evert Taube (1890-1976). It is one of the 200 popular and beloved songs he wrote and which have made him one of Sweden's "national poets". His popularity and greatness is madeevident since he is honoured to be on the new 50 Kronor banknote which will be issued during 2015. The Koster islands are the most westerly inhabited part of Sweden. The islands are situated in the northern part of the county Bohusln, not far fromthe Norwegian border. The song text goes:Here is the sea that embraces our Bohusln islandsand carries our father and brother in a rocking boat.Come to the beach, come with me, come singby my sideout over Skagerack inthe calm summer night.The arrangement for flute and wind band is written by Jerker Johansson (born 1967), who is conductor of the Gteborg Wind Orchestra, which has made a CD-recording of the song with Evert Taube's son Sven-Bertilinterpreting his father's work.

This march was commissioned by The office of cultural affairs in Fana and Ytrebygda (a part of Bergen Municipality) for the opening of The Bergen Light Rail. The premiere was given by The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and Smrs skolemusikkduring the light rails maiden voyage. Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway opened the light rail on June 22nd 2010.My ida was to give the march a strong link to Bergen. In the bass solo (letter B) I have quoted Bergens "national"anthem Nystemtn and in the Trio (letter E) I have used a bugle call from Bergens unique tradition of archerchery brigades. The first part of the march is meant to have a sort of train feel to it; somethingthats moving steadily through thestreets of the city.

The inspiration for Downtown Divertimento comes from Johan de Meijs daily wanderings in Chelsea, in lower Manhattan. The day begins with a leisurely walk to Madison Square Park with his dog Alice. They visit the dog run where she meets up withother city canines. On the way back they have a moment of reflection looking at the nearby Flatiron Building, the striking triangular city landmark. Johan goes for a run later in the day. His jogging shoes naturally head for The Highline, anabandoned railway viaduct that was transformed into a lushly landscaped National Park. Philip Sparke selected two well-known marches from the region around Southern Belgium and Luxembourg as the basis for his March Celebration: after we hear an original march theme and second theme in the bass, extracts from the Hmmelsmarsh (Hammelmarsch) and the spirited Marsch der Ardennen-Jger, which has become a kind of unofficial national anthem in these parts. This festive march is rounded off with another appearance of Philip Sparke's original theme.
