Miss Saigon is a thrilling musical by the duo Boublil and Schnberg, that is also responsable for Les Miserables. It is a modern version of Madame Butterfly. The plot tells the sentimental story of a G.I. Chris who falls in love with a beautiful native girl Kim during the Vietnam War. When he realizes that she is pregnant he has to go back home in the States where his wife is waiting for him. In order to allow the father to educate the child, the young woman commits suicide. With his usual orchestration skill, Johan de Meij made a fine sympho-nic portrait, containing some of the most beautiful songs of the musical. The five movements of this concerto, each, by design, in a different musical style, and requiring the soloist to perform on the three main soprano bass instruments: Trumpet, Cornet and Fluegelhorn, were written to demonstrate the modern trumpeter's ability to negotiate and produce a convincing interpretation in five different musical styles. The first movement, 'Sonata' is cast in a typical neo classical mode, calling the soloist to perform on the Trumpet; the second, 'Slow Blues' calls for Fluegelhorn; the third, 'Jazz Waltz', calls for Cornet; the fourth; 'Song', a modern setting of an old Taiwanese folksong, calls for Trumpet again; and the fifth, 'Samba', concludes the work with a brilliant outburst of Latin American rhythms and colors.

The legendary comedian Charles Spencer Chaplin is the author of a series of immortal films in which music plays a rather important role. Chaplin, who played the violin and the cello, wrote various musical themes himself, but was also assisted by several orchestrators, among others Alfred Newman, David Raskin and Arthur Johnson. Undoubtedly, 'Charlie' had some original musical ideas, but above all he remained a creator of melodies with simple but fascinating themes. Marcel Peeters brilliantly arranged a number of those tunes for symphonic band. You can hear successively: Limelight Theme - Morning Promenade - This is my Song - Titina - Mandolin Serenade - Green Lantern Rag - Falling Star - Napoli March - Ze Boulevardier. They will no doubt recall the most striking scenes from the masterpieces of this unforgettable artist.

£116.40Three Pictures for Band - Oliver Waespi
This composition consists of three sound pictures. When writing this work Oliver Waespi did not have any concrete image such as a scenery or a specific form in mind, but rather some typical visual movements. Hence the successive titles of the different parts: Procession, Dialogue and Waves. Numerous associations mutually link those parts as far as motifs and harmony are concerned. The motif of the ascending and descending fourth plays an important role in many a theme. There are many fourth chords by means of which Waespi tries to put a harmonic and unifying stamp on the compostition as a whole. Moreover there are similar or identical, though varied, motifs in the successive parts.The first part, Cortge (Procession), describes the dignified majestic procession by means of simple precise rhythms. At first the music is scarcely audible, as if coming from a distance; it gradually comes nearer until it reaches its climax in large chords, before fading away again. At each quarter note one could imagine a step. The second part, Dialogue, consists of broad outlines of dialogues between the different orchestral groups. Some instruments are asking questions, others are giving answers. After a rather sad passage, the music turns into a climax followed by a second passage that brings comfort and leads to a quiet ending. In the third part, there is a sudden movement coming up in the shape of waves. The principle of the wave, successively swelling and decreasing, dominates the entire musical structure of this part, even in the separate motifs.As far as the instrumentation is concerned there are the following notes: in the brass band version Oliver Waespi has a definite (orchestral) brass band strength in mind. If some parts (e.g. euphonium and flugelhorn) are played by several musicians, the conductor should feel free either to double or to thin those parts, providing the musical contents are not damaged. The same goes for the fanfare band in which the conductor can feel even more free as to the band's orchestral strenght. Anyway, a convincing overall sound is determining and that is to be realised by any kind of wind band.

In 2009 Marc Jeanbourquin was a trombonist in the harmony orchestra 'La Gerinia' from Marly (Switzerland). To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the summer music camp of its music school, he was commissioned to write a musical fairy tale for the band. Marc Jeanbourquin was inspired by stories written by his wife Lise Jeanbourquin, and so 'Syrielle the story of a fairy who wanted to catch a star', came into being. The theme of Syrielle is presented in the opening bars as a sequence of two chords, which convey the fairy like feeling of calm and mystery. She lives in a forest and is looking for friends. Then she comes across an ogre who also lives alone. When she sees him, she panics and hurts herself. The ogre takes her and cares for her, and the two end up becoming friends. One by one the themes for the two main characters are stated, and eventually evolve into a festive samba. At the end the theme from Syrielle returns, but this time in a major key, so to make a happy end to this musical fairy tale.

Bert Appermont composed the music for the first ever open-air musical, the Seed of Satan, which was shown for the first time in August 2002, in Kruibeke, Belgium. This gigantic spectacle which evolves around witchcraft at the beginning of the 17th century, attracted more than 10,000 spectators in just a few weeks. Bert Appermont subsequently arranged a suite of the highlights from the musical which he has called Saga Candida.

This Symphonic Poem was dedicated to the Musical Union El Xquer from Sumacrcer and its conductor, Josep Ros. The work is inspired by the people from Sumacrcer trying to tell the different characteristic things that identify it: its people, its festivals, the Xquer river, the Penya-Roja castle, its orange groves and streets. We can find different languages throughout the work to narrate it, all of them are related to each others by a small generator motive about all the musical idea. The work has been written to take part in the 129th edition of the International Competition of Valencia.
