Graham takes us first to Latin America, then to Japan, and onwards to sub- Saharan Africa. We get a gentle reprieve via a nostalgic hint of the British Isles before we land in the melting pot of all styles, the USA. In this final movement the driving swing section is abruptly stopped and a drum cadenza leads us back into the opening Latin music, with hints of the other styles as well. Described by Professor Ron Holz as "a global musical village", stylistic diversity is celebrated, and young musicians have fun while learning to master and embrace the performance practice requirements of each. ivind Westby has written a number of excellent but demanding instrumental arrangements for Concert Band. In the present one, he has transcribed five of the most famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) grew up near Ipanema, the famous beach in Rio de Janeiro. His big break through and most creative period came in the 50's and 60's which gave him the status as the greatest Brazilian composer of all times. Together with Stan Getz and Jo�o and Astrud Gilberto he recorded one of the best selling jazz-albums of all times, an album which feature several of his most famous compositions. His inspiration includes another Brazilian great; Pixinguinha, but also classical composers like Frederick Chopin and Claude Debussy. He died in NYC in 1994 after composing approx. 400 works. He is recognized all over the world as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century.

This work was inspired by the legend of the Klokkeven, in which a church bell plays the leading part. It forms a connecting thread throughout the composition. The work consists of three continuous movements, each with its own atmosphere and character. In The Black Robber, we hear dark sounds in the brass and fast chromatic motifs. The Swamp contains mysterious low parallel fifths, imploring solos and chafing dissonant harmonies. Finally, in The Bell sweetly musing solos are hopefully accompanied by the church bell ringing from a distance. After a number of changes in tempo, the music ends in a grand tutti.

Like most of Leroy Anderson's efforts, Belle of the Ball is light, effervescent, and devoid of conflict or disharmony. Anderson looked upon the piece as a modern-day American revival -- or revitalization -- of the Viennese waltz tradition. Having said that, the main theme sounds rather unlike a Strauss waltz, but the voice of Tchaikovsky is evident in its playful, fantasy-like character. The melody is rhythmic and comes in short groups of notes, beginning with two notes, then three, then expanding further; the music skates along elegantly. The middle section features a delightful variation on the theme, in which Anderson's gentle-belled sonorities impart a playful innocence. This exclusive Southern band edition by Mark Rogers reintroduces Anderson's enchanting work to new generations of audiences.

£99.99March of the Robot Army - Philip Sparke
March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held in Camposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was 'science fiction', so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato 'trio' melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

The song King of the Sea is taken from the TV series also named King of the Sea produced by The Norwegian Bradcasting Corporation.
