Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation, Musica et Orbi, at the instigation of its president, Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement, describing ananimal of the composers' choice, to form a suite called Bestiarium. A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medell n, Colombia. Dance of the Whaleuses the tenor instruments of the band to describe a lazy and graceful dance by a blue whale and is dedicated to endangered species around the world.

£206.99Songs of the East Coast Fishermen - Philip Sparke
100 years ago English composer Vaughan Williams visited Norfolk (an area on the east coast of England) to collect and notate folk songs from people of all trades and callings. Accompanied by a local clergyman, he visited The Tilden Smith, a pub which was a favourite haunt of the 'Northenders', the local fishermen, and in less than a week the composer had notated 61 songs. Vaughan Williams incorporated the best of these songs into his own music, most notably in A Norfolk Rhapsody and the Sea Symphony. Philip Sparke has composed this new suite based on five of these folk songs together with King's Lynn, a folk song which Vaughan Williams adapted into a popular hymn tune. This work was inspired by the legend of the Klokkeven, in which a church bell plays the leading part. It forms a connecting thread throughout the composition. The work consists of three continuous movements, each with its own atmosphere and character. In The Black Robber, we hear dark sounds in the brass and fast chromatic motifs. The Swamp contains mysterious low parallel fifths, imploring solos and chafing dissonant harmonies. Finally, in The Bell sweetly musing solos are hopefully accompanied by the church bell ringing from a distance. After a number of changes in tempo, the music ends in a grand tutti.Duration: 11.30

At the Edge of the Sea by Kirk Vogel is an energetic composition that depicts the sounds and activity associated with coastal waters. The motion of birds along the coastline is successfully characterized through the use of moving eighth notes, larger intervals, accents and some mixed meter. £99.99March of the Robot Army (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin and Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by Just Italia. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8 to 18 year olds which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was science fiction, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato trio melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.Duration: 5.00
