A powerful, brooding piece in minimalist style, Acentos Oscuras (Dark Accents) is a new departure for Rob Wiffin. He wanted to try and write a reasonably extended piece of minimalism but make the necessary rhythmic shifts by means of accents across the bar rather than continually changing the metre. Hence the ear picks up a lot of patterns of 5 that are actually placed across an even beat of 2. Without necessarily trying for a dark atmosphere the piece naturally evolved in that mood. There are episodes that are lighter and more playful but the primal power and obscure quality pervade much of the music.Duration: 8

The central 'Cameo' presents and re-presents a delicate, highly legato, melisma for the soloist. A somewhat brooding central episode provides both a moment of contrast and the opportunity for the soloist to deliver some free cadenza-type material before returning to the security of the opening calm. The closing 'Charabanc' is a freely developed rondo-style finale embracing influences from jazz and other light music forms. Described by conductor Brian Duguid as "a short ride on a PC", Pentium displays some common traits with the minimalist techniques of John Adams. A five-note figure, first heard in the clarinets and saxophones after the opening swirl and flourish, provides the essential building block for the rondo-like movement. Pentium takes it's name from the "silicon glen" where computer chips are manufactured.
