Vranjanka - Kenneth Hesketh
Vranjanka (pronounced VRAHN-yahn-kah) means "From Vranje," a town in southern Serbia. It is loosely based on the traditional folksong ano Duo. The melody is extant in two versions, one in 7/8 and one in 3/4. The musical form of the piece starts with a fairly slow introductory section, a faster second section cast in a set of variations on the folksong. Vranjanka was commissioned by Timothy and Hilary Reynish in memory of their son William.

East Coast Pictures - Nigel Hess
East Coast Pictures was commissioned by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from the National Westminster Bank plc. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people. Movement 1: Shelter Island is a small island situated near the end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap; but in the winter it is gloriously deserted and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in sea mists and driving rain. This 'picture' is a fond memory of a winter weekend on Shelter Island. Movement 2: In upstate New York lie the Catskills Mountains--an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen, they call you back again and again. Movement 3: New York - or to be more precise, Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, here is a 'picture' that needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked this is a foretaste of things to come!

The title of this piece translates from German to "The Master Teacher." Commissioned by the Florida Bandmasters Association in memory of Jack Crew, this piece serves to honor the memory of one of the all-time great teachers and musicians in our world of band music. The piece is written in a style reminiscent of Richard Strauss, one of Jack's favourite composers. Duration: 5:10

Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the world's most iconic monuments, memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosen three of these as the inspiration for this piece: 'The Lincoln Memorial' in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; 'The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial' on which steps the iconic speech 'I have a dream' was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kings' speech; and the 'Encore' statue in memory of the world famous African-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this final movement, Philip Sparke catches the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamism of Ellington's' music. The Chase BeginsThe peace of a mountain village is shattered by a dreadful rumour: whether animal or something more disturbing, a creature is said to be prowling the area. After a quiet beginning, the music builds up with tense, nervous lines: fear sets in. The soundscape becomes fantastical, almost like a Halloween night.The villagers gather to hunt down the beast, with the orchestra conveying their determination through clear and energetic writing. The chase accelerates, breathless and spectacular, up to an uncertain outcome: the creature vanishes, without anyone having seen it. The initial chorale returns, calmer but not reassuring. The village regains its tranquillity, while retaining the memory of a mystery that has never been solved.Duration: 11.45

£29.95Prelude on 'Lavenham' (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Nobes, Geoffrey
Prelude on 'Lavenham' was written for the 130th anniversary, in 2014, of Lavenham Corps in Suffolk and was first performed at their anniversary concert in the village's beautiful Parish Church by Kettering Citadel Band. It's an arrangement of a tune the composer wrote to the words, 'Lord, there are times', a lovely hymn by the Reverend Nick Fawcett. The arrangement is dedicated to the memory of Bandmaster Derek Wilding of Lavenham Corps.The music is serene and free-flowing and was written with the rich and warm acoustics of the lovely medieval church very much in mind. It should be played cantabile throughout, with close attention to contrasts in dynamics.
