Miss Saigon is a thrilling musical by the duo Boublil and Schnberg, that is also responsable for Les Miserables. It is a modern version of Madame Butterfly. The plot tells the sentimental story of a G.I. Chris who falls in love with a beautiful native girl Kim during the Vietnam War. When he realizes that she is pregnant he has to go back home in the States where his wife is waiting for him. In order to allow the father to educate the child, the young woman commits suicide. With his usual orchestration skill, Johan de Meij made a fine sympho-nic portrait, containing some of the most beautiful songs of the musical. The Swedish pop music group ABBA boasted a fantastic world wide success after winning the 'Eurosong Festival' in 1974 with the song 'Waterloo'. Johan de Meij was one of the very first arrangers to turn some of their songs into a medley for symphonic band. Your audience will, no doubt, recognize the hits 'Dancing Queen', 'Arrival' and 'Money, Money' which, in the meantime, became real evergreens.

£186.20Highlights from Chess - Benny Andersson
The composers of the musical Chess, Benny Andersson and Bjrn Ulvaeus, as well as the lyricist Tim Rice had already had a very successful career before they started this huge project. Andersson and Ulvaeus had been the male singers of the popular Swedish group ABBA, whereas Tim Rice had written the lyrics for Lloyd Webber's musicals 'Jesus Christ Superstar' and 'Evita'. The plot of the musical is situated in Merano, a small town in Northern Italy, hosting the Chess World Championships. The protagonists are the American titleholder and his Russian challenger, who are adversaries on both the sports and political level. Nowadays the subject is out of date, as Chess was conceived in 1984 when the political scene was completely different. This might be the reason why this musical did not hold out as long as e. g. 'Les Misrables' or 'Cats'. Anyhow the music remained very popular and songs such as 'Last Night in Bangkok', 'I know him so well' and 'Anthem' belong to the standard repertoire of 'musical classics'. In his 'Chess selection' Johan de Meij used the nice orchestral parts of the soundtrack which gave a kind of symphonic character to this musical.

£156.00Triptychon (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931) painted his famous Aino Triptych in 1891, with his own wife Mary as the model. It is inspired by the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic and depicts the story on three panels: The left one is about the first encounter of Vainamoinen and Aino in the forest. The right one depicts mournful Aino weeping on the shore and listening to the call of the mermaids of Vellamo who are playing in the water. The central panel depicts fishing Vainamoinen having thrown away a small fish, which turns out to be Aino, who laughs at him and vanishes forever.Duration: 10.30
