When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for Wind Band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available to Wind Band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done. A Child's Garden of Verses has a very special meaning for me. Bob Jager, a family friend, was visiting in our home, and my wife, Mitzi Noble, a soprano soloist, was singing to his children. Bob's two young children became so enthralled with the music that Bob wanted to capture that moment. So he composed this piece for Mitzi, and dedicated it to his children, Kathleen and Matthew. The text is from Robert Louis Stevenson's poems: I. Happy Thought; II. The Wind; III. The Land of Counterpane; IV. From a Railway Carriage; V. Escape at Bedtime. Bob writes: The ideal performance instrumentation would be one on a part. If a larger group is used the balance should be kept proportional. In a few places the terms Solo or One are used where the sonority is critical, and this should be strictly followed. Above all, the singer should never feel forced by the ensemble. This work was composed in 1972, and was never published. I am pleased that Bob has allowed me now to publish it under Noble Music Publications, so that it may be available for others to perform and enjoy. Mitzi writes: Although we did not have access at the time, the ideal performance would be with a throat mic so that the soloist is free to move around the stage and sing, as though singing and relating to children sitting on the front row.

Some time ago Charles Hine, a dear friend, asked me 'Isn't it about time you wrote a Czardas?' It wasn't such a silly idea. I'd studied violin as a child and having learnt numerous show pieces in that style I felt quite at home with the genre. Later in my youth I was lucky enough to work occasionally as accompanist to a lovely lady & singer Eve Boswell, who was partly Hungarian, and was generous enough to give me further insight into the nature of Czardas. Whilst the Wind Ensemble is not the instrumentation one might expect for such a piece the form is albeit rather more long-winded than some of the fiddle 'lollypops'.' - Hart, Paul.

£110.00Caramba! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Blezard, William - Noble, Paul
William Blezard began writing Caramba! during a tour of New Zealand. Yet the musical basis of this work is about as far away from Kiwi culture as one can get. The word Caramba has several translations from the Spanish, including Dear Me!, or Goodness Me!, or perhaps more colloquially, Golly, or even Holy cow!. The entire work has an exotic feel to it that is so suggestive of things Spanish or Latin American. This is helped by the extensive use of percussion, and of course the brass is pure Latin American dance style. The demanding piano part is featured as almost a 'concertante'. In the Concert Band arrangement, the piano is highly desirable to replicate the original score, but the arrangement includes enough doubling and a short cut to make the piece entirely playable without the piano. Caramba! has all the hallmarks of a great piece of concert music that pleases as well as excites. For bands that want a challenge that is sure to bring an audience to its feet, Caramba! is the piece!
