Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German "Musikverein Braunshausen" on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition, first performed on September 17, 1999, is not a street march but a concert march, just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio, on the other hand, is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme, wreathed by high woodwinds, is heard one more time after a contrasting newpart, but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march!

St. James Drive - Harm Evers
A visit to the United Stetes inspired Harm Evers to write this march. It has thus become an "American style" march-a happy "Swing March." The Pithy rhythnical melody and the simple harmony come together in a merry whole. Die Lustigen Dorfschmiede - Julius Fucik
Reading the title of this piece, namely "The Happy Village Smiths" it rather suggests a character piece than a zestful march. However, the saying "Don't let yourself be fooled" also applies in this instance, as "The Happy Village Smiths" belong to Fuc k's most popular marches. In an article that appeared in a Styrian local paper in the 1930s, Christine Fuc k speaks about common vacations with her husband in Gleisdorf. On the occasion of a walk in the vicinity of that city the couple came past a blacksmith's shop. The rhythm of the two blacksmiths hammering away on the anvil allegedly inspired Fuc k to compose this piece. Since the march goes back to the year 1908, and Christine and Fuc k's friendship started - not without frictions - only one year before that date, there are doubts concerning the validity of the story, although this report constitutes the only reference on the birth of this march.

Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant.
