£61.00Marche de Concert - Serge Lancen
This concert march was originally written for the piano in 1960. In the meantime, his friend Dsir Dondeyne whom Serge Lancen had met as fellow-pupil at the Paris Conservatoire National Suprieur de Musique had drawn Serge's attention to the symphonic band. Dondeyne had been appointed conductort of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band in 1954. The Marche de Concert was orchestrated by Dsir Dondeyne in March 1961 and it was the very first time that both great musicians collaborated. The march was premiered by the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix on the bandstand of the famous and beautiful Paris public garden 'Jardin du Luxembourg' on 8 July 1961.

£35.50Triglav - Julius Fucik
Julius Fuc k (1872-1916) appreciated life in Sarajevo. First compositions were written, which soon made him become one of the leading representatives of his profession in Austria-Hungary. Among those works also figured his elaborate piece "Austria's Glory and Honor", which unfortunately remains kind of ill-fated up to now. Yet another area of activities, where Fu k was able to demonstrate his talents was to stage the symphony concerts introduced by him in Sarajevo. Late in fall of the year 1900 Fuc k's time had come, when the regiment deployed from Sarajevo to Budapest. He lived in that metropolis on the Danube for the next some ten years, and during that period most of hisworks were composed. At that time his popularity also grew from day to day. The first performances of his works met with general interest, and not only numerous officers most of them were friends of Fuc k attended these events, they rather were attractions for all ranks of the society. It should also not be overlooked that music publishers were anxious to secure almost each one of his works for their publishing company, and most of them were printed immediately after their premieres. In 1899 the "Laban March" was written as his Opus 44. It was dedicated to Major General Rudolf Laban of Vralje, commander of the 3d Mountain Brigade which was stationed in Nevesinje. The title of the march then changed to "Eiserne Brigade" ("Iron Brigade") until it finally became known as "Danubia". It was first printed as late as 1933 by Bohuslav Leopold (Edition Continental). Leopold was a musician in Fuc k's regimental band, and later a successful publisher. He succeeded in securing the best of Fuc k's works for his company. Sketches of "Triglav" date back to 1903. The title alludes to the highest mountain of the province of Slovenia, and this was probably an apt means in the eyes of the composer to demonstrate his "Slavonic patriotism".

Radetzky-Marsch, Op. 228 - Johann Strauss Sr.
Presented for the first time in August 1848 in Vienna, Johann Strauss Sr's Radetzky-Marsch is one of the most famous marches ever composed, dedicated to Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz. Strauss was commissioned to write it to commemorate Radetzky's victory in the battle of Custoza.Next to the waltz An der schnen blauen Donau - On the beautiful blue Danube - by Johann Strauss Jr, the Radetzky-Marsch has assumed the role of 'unofficial' Austrian anthem over time. When it was performed for the first time in front of officers, these began to beat their hands and feet to the rhythm of the music, giving life to a tradition often seen in many concert halls when the march is performed live.The Vienna Philharmonic always performs the march as the final piece in the famous New Year's Concert.

This composition is based on the children's song 'Three Blind Mice', of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, and in different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn, the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer's wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordance with the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont

Defenders Day - Joseph Compello
The march Defenders Day is named for the legal holiday in Maryland which commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on September 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812. This event would lead to the writing of the United States of America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Cinquantieme, the fiftieth composition for symphonic band by Serge Lancen, was composed in the fall of 1993. It is written in an overture form and built on four distinct themes. First there is a merry and dynamic March, followed by a Waltz of the same character; then comes a small melody and finally the March turns up again, but this time it ends with a triumphant theme. The overture is dedicated to Alain Thiery and his Symphonic Band of Pont-Ste-Marie/La-vau/Creney. It was premiered during the gala concert closing the 120th anniversary celebrations of that band. The number in the title 'Cinquantieme' (Fiftieth), indicates the richness of Lancen's wind band repertoire. Fascinated by the symphonic band's extremely rich range of tone colours, Lancen has devoted all his talent and passion to it. For this type of orchestra he has written symphonies, rhapsodies, several concertos and even religious compositions with choirs and soloists.

Dominik Ertl (1857-1911) was subsequently musician, drum major and assistant conductor with the Band of the Austrian Infantry Regiment Number 4, better known as the 'Hoch-und Deutschmeister Regiment'. He was very popular in the fashionable Vienna high society of the last decades of the nineteenth century. He left the army to tour all over Europe with his own orchestra. He composed some ten marches but only the 'Hoch- und Deutschmeister' march became internationally famous. It is of course dedicated to the illustrious regiment and, though considered as the most musical of all Austrian military marches, it never became the official regimental march.
