More than a hint of the circus here! The motif in the horns and trombones suggests an element of slapstick and certainly the piece should not be taken too seriously. The trio is a contrast - Elgarian in flavour, using the dark lower register of the clarinets.

This delightful Grainger fanfare, entitled The Duke of Marlborough was originally written in March of 1939. The English folk tune is based on a melody sung by Mr. Henry Burstow and is also utilised as a countermelody in the first movement of Lincolnshire Posey. This Hunsberger edition, a warm addition to the Donald Hunsberger Wind Library is faithful to Grainger's intent and clarifies many intricacies. It offers a variety of performance opportunities serving as either an augmented brass ensemble fanfare or as one portion in a collage of shorter Grainger selections.
