The Prelude and Fugue (The Spitfire) by William Walton, written to accompany the film, The First of the Few, was the film story of the designer of the Spitfire fighter aircraft, R. J. Mitchell. This work was lifted, almost bodily out of the film score: exceptionally (for film music) it needed hardly any modification to turn it into a first-rate concert piece. The prelude, called by Stephen Lloyd one of Walton's finest marches, is the music heard over the opening credit titles in the movie. A central lyrical solo depicts the exhaustion and dying by illness of the aircraft's designer R. J. Mitchell. The fugue is used to describe the making of the Spitfire, and then the patriotic march returns joined with the fugue to mark the completion of the fighter aircraft. The majestic march-like drama of the Prelude is well-suited for graduation and other ceremonial events, and the total piece is a tour de force for contest performance.

Elgar's five Pomp and Circumstance Marches were written between 1901 and 1930 with number 1 undoubtedly being the most popular of the five. King Edward VII told Elgar that the tune would 'go round the world' if words were fitted to it. Elgar took the hint and included it (with slight rhythmic changes) in his Coronation Ode of 1902, with words by A. C. Benson. Thus was born Land of Hope and Glory which is now, of course, an integral part of the annual Last Night of the Proms, when the audience (with varying degrees of success!) sing the words along to the original march. The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. This short overture, originally titled Sapper 300 was commissioned for the 300th Anniversary of the Corps of Royal Engineers in July 2016. It is formed from the Royal Engineers Regimental March Wings and the Corps song Hurrah for the CRE. Wings itself comprises two tunes - The Path across the Hills and Flugel! Flugel!. Hurrah for the CRE is sung to the traditional South African tune Daar le die ding. All the main melodic material is derived from one of these, although they are often spliced together in unusual ways and set in a manner progressing from dark to light. The work was first performed at the ?€Sapper 300?€ Concert at Rochester Castle, 17 July 2016.

Though never before published, The New Spirit of '76 march is perhaps Katheryn McCall Noblitt's best known piece, and was among her favorites. Originally composed in 1947 as a piano solo, in 1975, in anticipation of our nation's Bicentennial celebration, she composed a second-piano part for two additional players, wrote patriotic words in both two-part and four-part harmony. The melodies are so well-crafted that they seem very familiar. This arrangement includes short quotations from other Bicentennial favorites - The Star-Spangled Banner, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Dixie, and Yankee Doodle. Dr. Noble directed its premiere performance in 1976 during a music festival, followed by performances with the 500-member Virginia Bicentennial Band and Marching Chorus in Philadelphia, Washington, Alexandria and other cities.
