Honor Bound is to be obligated by one's own code of conduct to do what is ethically right. This is often referenced in the military, but applies equally to our everyday conduct. This traditional military style march represents the dignity and worth of the individual. This is accomplished by featuring all sections at some point: a percussion introduction and interlude, trumpet fanfare, low brass melody, and woodwind lead. The notated dynamics are essential for musical contrast and the tempo can be adjusted according to student skill levels. Originally written for a film (The Big Brass Band) that was never made, this terrific but little-known march turned out to be the last march that Fillmore would write. Unusually rich in harmony, it was not published in Fillmore's lifetime. He had asked that it be named after his friend and fellow march composer, Karl L. King, if the movie was not produced.

This concert march with a solemn and festive character was commissioned to Gauthier Dupertuis by the the Musikkapelle Altheim e.V (Germany) to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The thematic material of the first section of the march is based on a three-note motif, proclaimed by the brass in the first measure. The second part of this theme presents a recurring motif throughout the piece. This first section has a festive and resolutely giocoso character. The trio presents a new, more lyrical and solemn theme. After a short divertimento based on the material from the first section, the theme returns in a majestic way, leading to a climactic finale. Altheim: a concert march perfect for a festive occasion!

Sousa composed this march at the request of his nephew, who was sponsoring his uncle's entrance into the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in 1922. The following year, the march received its premiere in Washington D.C., under the largest band ever led by Sousa, comprised of no fewer than 6,200 Shriners. This medium-level arrangement by Charles L. Booker, Jr. makes this classic march more accessible to bands, with scoring for modern instrumental forces and transposition to an easier key.
