Wings - Vince Gassi
The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his , it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further! Chinese Dragon Parade - David Marlatt
provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. The dragon dance is often part of a parade during Chinese New Year and other special events. It is performed by a team of skilled dancers using poles to manipulate a long flexible figure of a dragon. The colorful display combined with driving percussive music is a truly amazing spectacle to see. There are four different dragons represented here---each with a unique character and personality, then they are combined in different ways musically.

Odyssey - David Marlatt
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem and tells of the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus on his long journey after the fall of Troy. This feeling of adventure and mystery has been captured in this original work set in three movements. This piece was written in 2007 but now features some advanced parts for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet. These parts add range, technique, and control that is at the grade 3 level. This offers the opportunity for more advanced players to play these parts with more flourishes while the majority of the band can play at a grade 1.5 level.

Aria Della Battaglia
The current edition of Gabrieli's was transcribed for the modern orchestra wind section from the Canto Dialoghi Musicali de Diversi Eccelentissimi Autori: Venice 1590. The work is subtitled "per sonare d'instrumenti da fiato" ("to be played by wind instruments") and is one in a long line of such descriptive works dating from the sixteenth century with no instrumental designation whatsoever. The popularity of this genre, however, did not fade with the close of the Renaissance. Rather, a rich development continued into the nineteenth century with Beethoven's Wellington's Victory, the so-called "Battle Symphony," being a latter-day example.

You may even choose to have a drumset player lay down the beat. A great choice for holiday programs, or all year long. Inspiring!

Gateway West - John O'Reilly
This pioneering spirit is clearly reflected in the rhythmically exciting opening of . Shifting meters and interesting "percussion fills" are combined with bright, lighthearted woodwind melodies. The trip west was not an easy one and these early travelers endured great hardships and many unhappy days. The slow middle section of , with its minor tonality and lyrical melodies, reflects that part of the long, perilous journey.

Second Symphony - Alfred Reed
Commissioned in the late Fall of 1975, work on the SECOND SYMPHONY was not begun until the Summer of 1977, when the score was completed in sketch form in three months, July through September. The instrumentation was begun in the late Winter of that same year and the Full Score completed on March 27th, 1978. The first performance took place in Fairchild Auditorium on the campus of Michigan State University on May 6th, 1978, by the Michigan State University Symphonic Band under the direction of Kenneth G. Bloomquist. The symphony is a single-movement work embracing three distinct sections. The first, marked is a freely constructed passacaglia built on a flowing theme derived from the tone row that underlies the entire score: Bb-F-E-Ab-G-D-Db-C-Cb-Gb-Eb-A, and which is developed in alternating variations leading to a powerful climax at its close. The second section is, in reality, a tense, hard-driving double fugue characterized by a constant march-like rhythm underlying the further development of the original theme and its countersubject in both duple and triple meters. This section, marked also ends in an overwhelming climax and then dies away, preparing for the third and final section. This final portion of the music, marked is based upon two long, lyric themes, also derived from the row, that alternate with occasional reminders of some of the thematic material from the second section, now transformed into a rich, glowing and relaxed tonal tapestry woven together from the myriad of tonal colors available in contemporary scoring practice for the winds. At the very end, after a fortissimo re-statement of the theme in its original form as derived from the row, there is a gradual ebbing of the flood of tone from the full ensemble as the various choirs drop out one by one, leaving only a dark, warm color of low Clarinets, Baritone and Tuba, hinting at the opening of the symphony, together with a last reminder of the original motif in the Bells and Vibraphone, suggesting, for the work as a whole, an arch-form.

Gravity Wave - Brian Balmages
This dynamic and intense work describes a phenomenon in which clouds follow the same pattern as waves in the ocean. After an introspective opening, the music grows in intensity with long sustained chords pushing through intense rhythmic movement. Eventually, woodwinds become the focus of the work in a subdued section before undulating percussion begin the final powerful drive. Woodwinds join in a flurry of activity while brass players sustain epic chords once more, until a whirlwind of notes converge into one chaotic statement, punctuated by dissonant chords in the brass. The final sequence will leave the audience gasping. Intense!
