DIVERTIMENTO FOR BAND (Concert Band) - Woolfenden, Guy

ScherzoMany of the principal musical ideas for Divertimento for Band are derived from music composed for a documentary film called Country Camera, which celebrated the work of the earliest photographers who recorded a way of life which vanished at the outset of the first World War.The three movements are played without a break. The Toccata pits a four-note motif (which always appears with its mirror image) against several other derived ideas, including a sour horn (later trumpet) figure, a tiny lyrical passage initiated by a solo alto saxophone, and a more gentle, but still staccato episode. Many polytonal devices keep the four-note motif active. The Aubade contrasts a lyrical pastorale, initiated by a solo flute, with a more intense central section on the brass. The Scherzo finale has three main ideas; a tune for principal bassoon and euphonium of a playful child-like nature, a rushing figure for the woodwinds later developed by the full band, and a solo for trumpet and clarinet, involving a descending scale and a lyrical wide-leaping recovery. The exuberant coda is derived from themes from the previous two movements.The world premiere of Divertimento for Band was given at the conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Killarney on 13th July 2007 conducted by the composer, and is affectionately dedicated to Keith Allen, Jayne Rollason and Birmingham Symphonic Winds. -GW

Like a Child Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
The young have the future. This is the statement made at the beginning of 'Like a Child' by Andreas Ludwig Schulte. The opening radiates strength and ambition, but one is also made to wonder which direction will be chosen, which choices will have to be made.After the introduction the first steps on the path of life are taken, still somewhat unsteadily (the 3/4th time used illustrates this uncertainty). However, the child has now set off and will meet the future with an open mind, unafraid, even though experience will teach it how easily it can be hurt.Fortunately, it is sometimes allowed to be vulnerable and it discovers there will always be someone to offer shelter, support and love. (Adagio) The last part breathes a far greater independence. Youth is able to face the future, it can even take on the whole world! 07:45

£74.53Temperamental (Concert Band) Fendall Hill
This work by Fendall Hill was the set test for the 2021 National Brass Band Championships of New Zealand, B Grade. Here it has been adapted for Concert Band. The composer writes: 'J.S. Bach (1685-1750) is deemed by many to be the 'Ulimate Composer'. He added an incredible proportion to the DNA of western music, and his influence is heard in the music of today. Like many artists, he was not overly recognised as a composer during his lifetime, and it took an 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion by Mendelssohn to ignite a recognition of his place in the music world, a place he has maintained ever since. This piece starts with a similar spark of rediscovery of the music of Bach. It contains arrangements of various works, interspersed with composition based on Bach's chord structures, sections in the style of Bach, and original sections inspired by the moods created along the way. The first section explores the Toccata, and great organ works. This leads into an exploration of his choral works, and a finale based on the Preludes. The word 'Tempered' has different meanings, and all seem to apply to the music of Bach, and these appeal to the musical, engineering and spiritual aspects of my personal life. His music reaches to the humanity and divinity, it has strength, structure and order that creates frameworks in which incredible complexity reigns; and the complexity leads to a wildness, a kind of craziness that represents a range of human moods, and can change without warning. The same piece of music affects people in very different ways. I don't know if it's Bach's music, or us, but it can seem out of control and under control at the same time - the combination is highly temperamental. Black Gold was commissioned by Musikverein 1891 "Harmonie" Saarwellingen e.V. (Germany) to mark its 130th anniversary. This composition pictures the history of the mining industry in the town of Saarwellingen and its surrounding region, where the life of the miners as well as their families revolved around coal, or black gold, for centuries on end. The piece is based on motifs from the famous song "Glck auf, Glck auf, der Steiger kommt..." ("Good luck, good luck, the mining foreman comes"), a veritable anthem for miners the world over.

"All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood." This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first 'Cry for Freedom' it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement 'Dream of Freedom' takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale 'Freedom Above All' refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. This movement should be seen first and foremost as an affirmation of life, faith and hope for a better world.

This emotional work is a tribute to an exceptional man who has been there for 'his' orchestra all his life, with a warm heart for 'his' musicians. Each musician will recognize the connection and the passion for music in this piece.

Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. 'AwakeningVillage', the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. 'Bintje Monument' was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) whodeveloped the well-known potato variety called 'bintje'. The finale, 'Journey into the Unknown' refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.
