This tumultuous composition tells the legend of the town of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle lived a dragon. When it appeared it threatened to destroy the town with it fiery breath if a human sacrifice was not offered. St Michael confronted the dragon in a battle without equal. As a knight armed with a double edged sword the archangel battled against the dragon and decapitated it. Thus the city was saved. To represent the archangel the composer has chosen the hymn tune Laudate Dominum . The dragon is symbolised by a series of menacing chords.

Jacques Offenbach was born in 1819 in Cologne, Germany, but as a child he moved to Paris where he received a thorough musical education. In his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld, Offenbach parodies the famous Greek legend of Orpheus and Euridice. Indirectly, however, he criticises the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture was not written entirely by Offenbach, Carl Binder added various pieces to it for a Viennese production of this operetta in 1860 and since then, these pieces have remained part of the composition. In 1942 Glenn Miller voluntarily joined the army and founded the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and with his music he kept up the morale of the troops. In December 1944 he boarded an aircraft in England that would never reach its destination (France) - the plane was never found. The patriotic legend of this great composer however lives on in his music. Pennsylvania 6-5000 was one of the greatest successes of his famous band and is as popular today as it was in the 1940s.
