Emergence is a positive and uplifting composition for the youngest of concert band students that uses only the first six notes of the Bb concert scale. The sheer joy and excitement beginners exhibit from the discovery inherent in learning their instruments is a wonderful thing. This piece was written as a representation of that joy as these young students emerge from their first foray into music and glimpse of the musicians they can become.

Beyond was written to celebrate America's exploration of space, culminating with the historic moon landing of Apollo 11 in July, 1969. The music moves through the exciting events: a sunrise awakening, the victorious emotion of the successful landing, the spreading news, trepidation at the challenges returning to earth, and the ultimate relief and joy at the safe splashdown of the NASA astronauts. Program NotesBased on the song melodies "Give Me Joy in My Heart, Keep Me Praising" and "Praise, My Soul the King of Heaven," the music is largely light-hearted in nature with some florid semi-quaver work overlaying the melodic lines and some interesting interplay between the two selected tunes. We believe that it will have wide appeal both to players and listeners.Andrew Mackareth originally wrote this piece for The Salvation Army's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, but it was first published in a rescored version for brass band. We are please to be able to release it in its original form in this collection of wind band music.

When I write music I feel a need to comment on the world around us - which, right now, is not always a happy society. Variations on a Fourth was written for an innovative project initiated by the Siena Wind Orchestra from Tokyo. Four European and four Japanese composers created a new wind orchestra piece for a special concert held on 15 June 2019 in Bunkyo Civic Concert Hall, where all eight works - that were recorded for a CD release the previous day - were performed. Variations on a Fourth comprises four variations, all of which feature the musical interval of a fourth in much of their melodic and harmonic material. The result is a four-movement work of wide-ranging appeal that will be an absolute joy to play!
