This work was commissioned by the Rokko Verde Wind Orchestra in Japan. Musically it depicts aspects of both the beautiful, open-minded home of the Wind Orchestra - the Kobe City of Hyogo Prefecture - as well as the hope felt following the difficultyof the 1995 Hanshin-Awaii earthquake. Satoshi Yagisawa uses an impressive chorale as a cornerstone of this piece, which is written in his recognisable energetic style.

In a Japanese Garden - Ed Huckeby
This is a great opportunity for your ensemble to present a selection highlighting the musical styles of this richly vibrant culture. Written as a result of the composer's visit to Japan, this character piece is constructed in the style of a "promenade"...as if the listener is strolling through a traditional garden filled with sculptured trees and shrubs, fish ponds and beautiful flowers. The subtle melodic and harmonic elements convey a carefree sense of serenity, joy and peace to the listener. This will be a concert favorite for both your students and your audiences.

He is already a real superstar in Japan, and with this piece, we get a little peek at why this is so. This piece is reminiscent of a flashy movie soundtrack with powerful and enthralling melodies and spectacular rhythmical sections. A very promising piece from a very promising composer.

Centennial Prelude - Jan Van der Roost
This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed! It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Yamanobe no Michi - Itaru Sakai
"Yamanobe no Michi" (road at the foot of a mountain) is located east of the Yamato basin. It is the oldest road in Japan and is about 35km (21.5 miles) long. The oldest market and positions used for trading merchandise over the centuries are found along this road. While composing this work the composer visualised the activity along "Yamanobe no Michi" imagining the solemn procession of the aristocracy, as well as the chaos that traffic often presents. He also kept in mind the tumultuous history that this road has seen and still represents today.

Sakura Variations - Kees Vlak
The blooming of the cherry trees each spring is a great event in Japan. In the evening friends meet under the pink and white cherry blossoms for a picnic. It is a striking sight, especially in big cities. Vendors sell Japanese food, entertainers andclowns perform, and the typically cautious Japanese seem to be more relaxed during the cherry blossom, or "Sakura". Kees Vlak captured this atmosphere with his "Sakura Variation"; its theme employs a subtle drum rhythm. The first variation is titled"clowns" and opens with three bass drum strikes. The theme appears in 3/4 time and is repeated several times with surprising changes. An impetuous tempo with dissonant elements suggests a clown's mischievous behaviour. The second variation in a minormode sounds very sad and dramatic. Is this the sadness when thinking of the end of the cherry blossom, as all the petals "snow" down from the trees? The cherry trees will bloom again next year, so the finale celebrates a joyful "Sakura".
