This piece contains two distinctively different themes---a traditional European folk song sounding melody and a Japanese inspired one. Each melody is introduced on its own, then they are combined---with both themes playing simultaneously! This creates a very effective and beautiful sonority. This piece was written to celebrate the twinning of two cities---one in Canada and the other in Japan. (2:25)

In ancient Japan, the shogun were the military commanders appointed by the emperor. Grand and regal, when a shogun appeared to the public, there was a sense of awe and power at this warrior leader. Flanked by armies of samurai warriors, their power was obvious and their respect was demanded. This clever piece for very young band uses only the 5 notes used in a pentatonic scale (like playing just the black keys on the piano). This gives this beginning band piece a true Asian sonority. "Grace of Oaths" was commissioned by the Symphonic Band of the Seinan Jo Gakuin University and the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. The University was established by a Southern Baptist missionary; therefore they commissioned a chorale piece for the anniversary. Lush harmonies, well crafted themes and balanced ensemble writing make this an excellent selection for concert or contest use.
