This piece is a kind of flashback on my experiences of my time as an amateur musician in my hometown of Gjvik (often called "The White City"). It was at a time when the expressionas had to be created by myself and the music performed by the band ("The Liverflower") was a kind of a voyage of discovery for a young boy. A lot of the music I played at that time has shaped me as composer and musician. I remember the beautiful melodies and the rhythmic passages with a nostalgic smile. Maybe this music can make an impression on new generations of band musicians.

Edelweiss Brass Orchestra is a Japanese concert band based in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1978, the ensemble has grown from musical strength to strength and in 2018 they commissioned a new work with Jan Van der Roost for their 40th anniversary concert. The title Hidamari could loosely be translated as "In the Sunshine". A short quote from the famous musical The Sound of Music (you got it, 'Edelweiss'!) is a subtle nod to the name of the commissioning ensemble. Hidamari reflects the idea that EBO is like a home for all musicians: together, they are one big family.

The fascinating life of Leonardo da Vinci and his enormous curiosity spurred Johan de Meij to experiment with musical material, by using only the ivory keys of the piano during the composition process. DA VINCI opens with a grand, massive chord over five octaves throughout the orchestra. This chord, the Da Vinci Chord, is the connective tissue between the various sections, and it leads to a radiant C major chord, as an ode to one of the greatest geniuses of all time.

It incorporates both original musical themes by Meacham and melodies from American patriotic songs of the era such as "Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean" and "Dixie." The "patrol" format was popular in the second half of the 19th century. The format was intended to represent a military band approaching, passing, and fading into the distance.

Tempus Fugit begins with a ticking clock, to which gradually small, repetitive motifs are added. The introduction builds to an optimistic 'Carpe Diem' theme. "Seize the day". The Allegro that follows gives a reflection of our hectic society, played in a rushed feeling. After an eruption a more reflective section follows, and then the Carpe Diem is heard once more. The composition ends as it begins, with the ticking clock that never stops. Time never stands still.

The Oversea Treasure is a fantasy piece with two themes. It reflects the search for a treasure lost in the middle of the ocean. Through music we can perceive the initial force with which an adventure usually begins, then begins the melancholy and even a little discouragement. The author manages to recover all the strength and hopes when finally the search ends one realizes that the true treasure was the path itself. The real treasure lies in achieving the goals, in what we have to do and learn.
