Old West Trilogy - Gene Milford
Composer Gene Milford has woven together three popular folks songs from the American West into a delightful rhapsody. It begins with a fanfare-like presentation of The Colorado Trail folk song followed by a lush and lyrical setting of Goodbye Old Paint. This is followed by a rousing finish based on The Old Chisolm Trail. This perfect piece for festival performance is easy enough for developing bands, making it a real winner!

Guardians of the Banner - Joseph Compello
A very nice original march from popular composer Joseph Compello, Guardians of the Banner contains many aspects of a traditional American march but with the developing student in mind. It has an extended introduction, a first strain, second strain, and a break strain followed by a return of the first strain to end the march. There is not the typical modulation to a trio section, making this march much more playable for this level of band. The march is at a more moderate march tempo and contains some really nice melodies, making it a great way to introduce this important style to younger students.

Trombonanza - Joseph Compello
Written in the style of the many trombone features from the prolific pen of Henry Fillmore, this is a winning selection for featuring the low brass of the young ensemble. It includes ample use of the trombone glissando (colloquially referred to as a smear). Promised Land - Sean O'Loughlin
Promised Land is a serious-sounding, new piece for the developing band that sounds much more difficult than it plays, allowing your students to show off while remaining at their ability level. The title has its roots in the ideals of John Humphrey Noyes, who founded the Oneida community in the late 1840s. He built a thriving agricultural and spiritual community that became his promised land. The music depicts the struggles and triumph of those first settlers in the area, who worked the land and fought for their ideals through much persecution. Promised Land contains all of the rhythmic interest and memorable motives that Sean's music is so known for. It is also an excellentchoice for contest/festival.

Originally written as part of the Commissioned Works for School Bands sponsored by Carl Fischer on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the firm, Ginger Marmalade has become one of the best known of serious twentieth-century works for school band. A humorous program number that plays with the listener's expectations, it is technically simple, but uses unusual sound resources (clapping hands, rapping heels, novel percussion sounds) o produce a work that delights the ear and challenges the mind. Morning Star was commissioned by the conductor of the Grand Ledge, Michigan High School Wind Symphony, Michael Kaufman, to celebrate the opening of the school's new concert hall. It was premiered by the students in May of 1997.
