Thunderbird - Robert Buckley
The Thunderbird is the spirit of thunder and lightning, believed by Native Americans to take the shape of a great bird. It is also the symbol of the North Vancouver Youth Band who commissioned this march to commemorate their fi ftieth anniversary. Commissioned by the Fremont, Nebraska High School Band, this work is subtitled: "A Nebraska Overture." It is a descriptive work depicting the Platte River from its quiet origins in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, which then winds across the rolling Nebraska landscape. There is a spirited pioneer theme depicting the courageous Americans who 150 years ago paved the way west by blazing the Oregon and Mormon Trails along the Platte River.

This musical whimsy is based on the well known folk tune Turkey in the Straw. After the introduction we meet our friend as we all know him from the folk tune.At Moderato we catch the turkey in a melancholy mood, as he thinks back to the good old days, spent as a youngster at Old McDonald's Farm, which is next door to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. But that's another story. Sadness overcomes him at Adagio. The mood passes and next we see him happily dancing a jig. Fate makes an appearance in the shape of the human hand; there is a short chase, and our turkey cries for the last time.After a brief period of mourning, we find that our friend has gone the way of many other turkeys, and has ended up on the Christmas table. A short Coda concludes the piece. Linguistic footnote: The Turkish word for turkey translates as 'Indian bird'.

Leroy Anderson's setting of Old MacDonald Had a Farm has little in the way of documentation. It was written for and programmed by the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler, but it did not enjoy frequent hearings, so the setting was unknown outside of Boston. Conductors should feel free to feature animal sounds closer to home (for instance the sound of pigs in swine-rich Iowa or bison in Montana). To that end it is suggested that the members of the percussion section use their creativity to add humor and local color to this arrangement. This exclusive Southern band edition by Mark Rogers reintroduces Anderson_x001A_s enchanting work to new generations of audiences.
