Free Running (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Buckley, Robert
Free Running is an exciting, high velocity tour-de-force that will keep both musicians and the audience on the edge of their seats. Inspiration for the work came from the pointillistic paintings of Seurat (who created images by using tiny spots of primary colours on his canvas) and from Parkour, a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the structures of the rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints. The resulting creation is a non-stop piece of music made up of only staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble. This is guaranteed to leave the audience breathless!Duration: 5:15

Planets in Motion (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lopez, Victor
The composer's premise that students learning resembles planets in motion, moving faster as learning increases much like planets closer to the sun orbit at a greater speed, was the inspiration for this original work. Using only the first few notes presented in most beginning band methods without eighth notes in the winds, this original work is scored without a key signature in order to be accessible even to the least-experience ensemble. This engaging melody will make your very beginning band sound very advanced, featuring solid scoring and doubling throughout. Right in the pocket!Duration: 1:45

Somebody to Love (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Mercury, Freddie - Schaars, Peter Kleine
Somebody to Love, from rock legends Queen, is one of the most popular rock ballads of all time. Taking its inspiration from gospel choirs, the band's vocal lines were multiplied many times over to create a full choral sound. This layered effect has been carefully preserved in Peter Kleine Schaars' powerful arrangement for concert band.Duration: 4.00

Scirocco (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barrett, Roland
Scirocco comes from the name given to a Mediterranean wind that originates as a dry and dusty breeze in the Sahara Desert, accumulates moisture and velocity as it crosses the Mediterranean Sea, and often reaches hurricane speeds. With an inspiration like that, you can be sure the energy level will be at a peak. The work has an elementary introduction to contemporary aleatoric notation that enhances the dynamic sparkle!Duration: 2:00

Of Distant Peaks (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sheldon, Robert

Moving Heaven and Earth (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Moving Heaven and Earth consists of a theme and 4 variations; although the theme is original it contains a phrase heavily influenced by a 14-bar passage from the Libera Me in Faur's Requiem. It is a sequence that the composer finds harmonically compelling and, although it is never quoted directly, it appears in altered form in the theme and each of the variations. In the original, the passage is set to the words: Quando cli movendi sunt et terra (When the heavens and the earth shall be moved) which gave inspiration for the title.Duration: 10:15

Iditarod (Dog Sled Race) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Buckley, Robert
3rd Movement of Portraits of the NorthThe annual Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race between the Alaskan cities of Anchorage and Nome covers 1,049 challenging miles of jagged mountain ranges, dense forests and windswept coastlines. This amazing feat of endurance was the inspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog's view to the eagle's), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic, sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then - back to the race! With renewed energy, the dogs race the final stretch; the music building and intensifying to the very end. Iditarod was commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band to commemorate the band's 80th anniversary. Take your audience on this exhilarating ride!Duration: 5:35

Wings (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gassi, Vince
The men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force are the inspiration behind this original composition by Vince Gassi. The first work in his Armed Forces Suite, it takes off with a bright, spirited theme first heard in the flutes. The rest of the ensemble soon joins in the maneuvers and offers a fuller tactical report. Clarinets take over with dignity, providing a lyrical contrast, and are supported by a stately accompaniment. It isn't long before we start to feel the "spirit of adventure" building to a contrasting section conveying images of stealth and intrigue. Covert operations lead finally to a restatement of the opening theme by the brass with flute and clarinet obligato. Interlace with fragments from the covert section and we are carried to a soaring conclusion. If you are looking for a spirited concert opener or closer, look no further!Duration: 3:15

Chimera (Ki-meer'-uh) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gassi, Vince
Greek mythology is the source of inspiration for this new piece for young band. A chimera is a fire- breathing monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail. Fearsome indeed!! But just as dynamic is this musical tale of valour depicting a warrior knight's epic quest to defeat the beast. Spirited harmonies and energetic rhythms abound, contrasting perfectly with a moving lyrical section.Duration: 4.00
