From the opening bars of driving eighth-note rhythms through the solemn and lyric middle section, the concept of "time moving forward" is represented by numerous musical devices. As the composition concludes, the full hymn is heard while an off-stage saxophone quartet and metallic percussion sounds "tick away" to an intriguing, unique conclusion.

This musical work for concert band is based on the hymn Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus with some additional material created for transitions and unity. The piece is written in the style of classic hymn song settings for band and should be played with careful attention to expression and balance.

The Advent hymn we all know today as O Come, O Come, Immanuel was arranged in its modern form by Thomas Helmore and published in Hymnal Noted in 1856. Both the words and melody, however, predate this version by centuries.The tune, Veni Immanuel, is taken from a 15th century processional of French Franciscan nuns, part of the setting for the funeral hymn Libera Me. This arrangement aims to expand on the power and mystery of the original tune and will be most effective if the solo trumpet at the start and end of the piece can be placed away from the band, maybe at the back of the auditorium.

Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) belongs to a forgotten generation of English composers who are often over-shadowed by Sir Edward Elgar, and the result has been that much of their work is little played or forgotten.
