A Psalm of Praise - Score and Parts - James Curnow
Program NotesOriginally conceived as a brass band tone poem, A Psalm of Praise gained huge popularity when it was first published in 1980. When it first appeared in print, the work was widely performed by Salvation Army bands around the world. It is full of interest and presents plenty of what for many bands will be realistically achievable levels of musical and technical challenge.As with much Salvation Army music, it was inspired by words from scripture, specifically from Psalm 100. Musically, it is based on the well-known hymn tune Praise My Soul the King of Heaven, with motifs and fragments of the tune appearing throughout the work in various guises alongside the original thematic material.James Curnow's skillfully economic use of melodic and rhythmic ideas is demonstrated to perfection in this work, which will be rewarding to rehearse in detail and perform and will provide a useful addition to concert repertoire.

We believe that it will have wide appeal both to players and listeners.Andrew Mackareth originally wrote this piece for The Salvation Army's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, but it was first published in a rescored version for brass band. We are please to be able to release it in its original form in this collection of wind band music.

£273.00A Child's Garden of Dreams
David Maslanka's A Child's Garden of Dreams for Wind Ensemble, written in 1981, takes inspiration from the writings of Carl Jung, specifically the dreams recounted in Man And His Symbols. Five of the twelve dreams recounted by Jung serve as motifs and titles for the five movements of this composition: 1. There is a desert on the moon where the dreamer sinks so deeply in to the ground that she reaches hell; 2. A drunken woman falls into the water and comes out renewed and sober; 3. A horde of small animals frightens the dreamer. The animals increase to a tremendous size, and one of them devours the little girl; 4. A drop of water is seen as it appears when looked at through a microscope. The girl sees that the drop is full of tree branches. This portrays the origin of the world; and 5. An ascent into heaven where pagan dances are being celebrated; and a descent into hell, where angels are doing good deeds. A Child's Garden of Dreams is a pillar of the standard wind ensemble canon, performerd hundreds of times by a variety of professional and collegiate ensembles and recorded on several critically acclaimed albums. Maslanka has also set the work for full orchestra (C672).

Opening with a lush flute soli, "Into Heaven's Hands" explodes with power, emotion and jubilation in celebration of a beautiful life. The powerful opening gives way to a lyrical and whimsical faster section. David Shaffer's mastery of intricate harmonic progression is on full display throughout this work. A slower, lyrical middle section compliments the entire piece with a balance of pure musical emotion. The percussion writing is simple but very effective in producing an exciting and musical experience for both the players and the listeners. An excellent choice for contest or festival! Duration: 6.30

Resonemus Laudibus is a 14th-century carol which was widely known in medieval Europe, and is still performed today. David Willcocks' arrangement brings a modern excitement to the piece, which would not have been out of place all those centuries ago. The Latin text is translated: 1. Resonemus laudibus cum jocunditatibus ecclesiam fidelibus. Let us make the church resound with the joyful praises of the faithful. Apparuit quem genuit Maria He whom Mary bore has appeared. 2. Deus fecit hominem ad suam imaginem et similitudinem. God made man in his own image and likeness. 3. Deus fecit omnia caelum, terram, maria cunctaque nascentia. God made all things, heaven, earth, the seas and all creation. 4. Ergo nostra concio in chordis et organo benedicat Domino. Therefore let our congregation praise God with strings and organ. 5. Et Deo qui venias donat et laetitias nos eidem gratias. And to God, who gives favours and happiness, we give thanks. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.
