Edward Elgar (1857-1934) originally composed this work in 1887, as a Pie Jesu, when he was an organist in the St George's Church in Worcester. Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. From the Highlands - Marco Pütz

Enjoying his travels in Scotland, Marco Ptz decided to compose a piece for wind band, based on Scottish folk songs. While in the airport at Glasgow, shortly before boarding his plane, Ptz bought a collection of folk melodies from all over Scotland that had been arranged for flute. At first he harmonized several melodies in his own style, then he began to alter the resulting pieces (especially rhythmically). Eventually Ptz added passages here and there and orchestrated the piece for wind band. Ptz's resulting composition is an educational work that is both enjoyable and appealing to players of all ages, although it was written with young bands in mind. From theHighlands is part of a project to increase the repertoire available to youth and school bands, both in quantity and quality; an important personal and musical goal for the composer. This is Ptz's third contribution of this sort to be added to the De Haske catalogue, following his successful Arrows of Lightning and Four Sketches for Band.

    Mirage - Jacob de Haan

A mirage is an illusion, something without substance that does not really exist. Although not real, its unattainable nature is perfect for musical inspiration. Composer Jacob de Haan was strolling through a picturesque forest of the Dutch Gelderland when he thought he saw a body of water. While there was no water, its mere image created waves that can be relived in De Haan's original composition, Mirage.

They are Coming - John Emerson Blackstone

There are people who are capable of planning well. They live their lives in a well-structured manner and know exactly what they have to do. The outcome of one such situation is 'They are coming'. John Emerson Blackstone had been working on a new composition for some time when he received a telephone call from his editor, who told him that the deadline was approaching rapidly, even worse, that it would expire at the end of that same day and that he would drop by in person to fetch thecomposition! Blackstone set to work in a frenzy and completed the last details. When his editor arrived, the piece was finished ..... and got its definitive title: 'They are coming'.

Rumanian Folk Dances - Béla Bartók

Bla Bartk (1888 - 1945) showed from the beginning of his career an interest in popular music. He began studying music at the age of five and eventually focused on composition and piano. He collected a lot of popular songs, especially during his studies in Hungary, but also music from Romania and Slovakia. This had a lot of influence on his style. In his compositions, Bartk uses many Hungarian popular themes and rhythms, and even his own original works always refer to the same rhythmic and melodic folk character. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Bartk detached himself from romanticism and began to delineate his style on harmonic procedures based on diminished and augmented intervals, on bitonality, and on marked percussiveness, characteristics that are at the core of popular music. The Romanian Dances are a collection of seven folk dances, originally composed for piano (1915, the first six) and then transcribed for a small symphonic orchestra (1917). Of purely modal language, like almost all Bartk's music, each dance comes from a different area of Romania (Stick Dance, Sash Dance, In One Spot, Horn Dance, Romanian Polka, Fast Dance of Belnyes, and Fast Dance of Nygra).
