The symphonic poem 'The Island of the Light' illustrates legends and places of the island of Minorca. In ' Cova d'enXoroi ' the listener can hear the legend of a Moor nicknamed Xoroi, who after a pirate attack, was left behind without being able to embark and remained hidden for a long time in secret without anybody knowing. Each night Xoroi stole what he needed to survive and during the day he stayed hiding in the cave. 'On the clouds ', the composer lets go, showing us his vision of the island from the sky, a movement that is full of strong emotional content. Composer Naoya Wada has written Wind On The Hill as an ode to his youth. As a child he lived in a house on a steep hill. From here he had a clear view of the nearby town, the amusement park, and the yearly firework display in the bay. All of these aspects as well as the wind as the title suggests have been worked into the piece. Naoya left the hill at age eighteen.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light was a smash hit from the rock star Meatloaf. On the album he sang the song with Ellen Foley, but the famous video clip was play backed with the singer Karla DeVito. In this song, composed in three sections, a man reminisces on a sex date he had in his teens with a girl. The setting, in classic American style, is inside a parked car. The ensuing activities between boy and girl are then described in the style of a baseball game report.

The Swiss composer Theophil Furter (1871-1954) played in several amateur wind bands of his home area before he became conductor of the 'Harmonie' band at Steffisburg and the Spiez Municipal Band. He founded his own publishing firm in Thun and composed a series of waltzes and marches. Molenaar Edition published several of his marches, such as 'Die alte Garde', 'Karl Kupfer Marsch', 'Mit klingendem Spiel' and this '12. Regiment Marsch' (Twelth Regiment March).

Rumanian Folk Dances - Béla Bartók
Bla Bartk (1888 - 1945) showed from the beginning of his career an interest in popular music. He began studying music at the age of five and eventually focused on composition and piano. He collected a lot of popular songs, especially during his studies in Hungary, but also music from Romania and Slovakia. This had a lot of influence on his style. In his compositions, Bartk uses many Hungarian popular themes and rhythms, and even his own original works always refer to the same rhythmic and melodic folk character. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Bartk detached himself from romanticism and began to delineate his style on harmonic procedures based on diminished and augmented intervals, on bitonality, and on marked percussiveness, characteristics that are at the core of popular music.The Romanian Dances are a collection of seven folk dances, originally composed for piano (1915, the first six) and then transcribed for a small symphonic orchestra (1917). Of purely modal language, like almost all Bartk's music, each dance comes from a different area of Romania (Stick Dance, Sash Dance, In One Spot, Horn Dance, Romanian Polka, Fast Dance of Belnyes, and Fast Dance of Nygra).

According to the composer, this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo, who enchanted nature with his music, is tragic, as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey, one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintetconsisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually, these five players join the band, after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect.
