Gayaneh Suite - Aram Il'yich Khachaturian
In 1941, Khatchaturian composed a ballet soon to be known throughout the world - Gayaneh. In this piece the composer describes the landscape of his native country Armenia, and the people who tried to build the country to create a happy life there. Evil powers, however, try to destroy the peaceful work. Gayaneh is a young ordinary woman who cares greatly for her village. In addition to the fight for the village she also fights for her own happiness. Khatchaturian was a master at using elements of folk music in his compositions and these can be clearly heard in this arrangement for concert band by Wil van der Beek.

The Pithy rhythnical melody and the simple harmony come together in a merry whole. The composer, arranger and band leader Bert Kaempfert is considered a giant in the field of easy listening music. He wrote songs for world renowned stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Shirley Bassey, Anita Kerr, Frank Sinatra and many others. He created his own unique sound with the Bert Kaempfert Orchestra and had huge international success. His affinity with 'black music' is significant and his fascination with South African sounds led to their incorporation into several of his compositions and arrangements. Roland Kernen has used the following well-known tunes in this medley: Zambesi, African Beat, Wimoweh, Happy Trumpeter and Skokiaan.

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.
