March of the Peers (From Iolanthe) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sullivan, Arthur - Michaelson, Edward

Stirring stuff from the most quintessentially British of the Gilbert and Sullivan Savoy operas. W.S. Gilbert's libretto pokes gently fun at the House of the Lords, but Sullivan's music allows them all their pomp. This great march is now brought well within the grasp of young bands.

Marching to the Savoy (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sullivan, Arthur - Johnson, Stuart

That Gilbert & Sullivan's operettas have survived and are loved everywhere is partly due to Gilbert's witty libretti, but it is Sullivan's tunes which have made the works timeless. In this arrangement, Johnson, Stuart skillfully combines 'The Lord High Executioner' (from 'The Mikado') with 'Cat Like Tread' (from 'Pirates of Penzance').

The Long Day Closes (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

Although Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) is best known for his collaboration with W.S. Gilbert on their famous operettas, he also wrote much instrumental, chamber and orchestral music, church anthems and around 20 secular part songs. One such song was The Long Day Closes which has remained in the popular repertoire of many male voice and mixed choirs. The melody is a combination of hushed hymn-like reverence and emotional intensity, which provides the young band the opportunity to work on dynamics, ensemble, intonation and balance in chorale style.Duration: 3:00
