Funk attack is atypical of "the concert band scene" and requires absolute precision in phrasing and rhythm. Without the support of a great percussion groove, the orchestra plays an interlocked theme in the central section in style of recent American Big Bands. Otto M. Coogee Funk is a wild and fast paced exploration of funk riffs and rhythms. Inspired by a trip to Sydney in 2005, it is divided into three core sections. The work opens with a blazing brash fanfare that, after a distant call from an off-stage saxophone quartet, subsides into a drunken nautical seascape. After a series of solos from flugel horn and saxophone the work charges headlong into a wild funk fugue which soon rears out of control. A lonely horn solo brings the piece to a melancholic close.

The work's quiet section temporarily soothes down the heated passion of its two corner movements, but everywhere else action is required throughout. The work was commissioned in 1991 by Troms? Brass. Situated just above the Polar Circle, Troms? is one of Norway's northernmost towns. Topographically, the town probably comes across as freezing cold, but Troms? is famous for its 'warm' night-life. This work by Swiss composer Oliver Waespi was one of the highlights at the 2006 Eidgenssische Musikfest in Lucerne. The piece opens with a festive fanfare featuring the brass section. The mood changes to a funk passage which develops and grows into a James Brown-like groove. It also includes an ad libitum drum solo. A slow blues lends a calmer feel and the piece culminates with striking interwoven fanfare and funk styles. This work is highly recommended for concert programmes but it can also make a spectacular, unconventional choice for a competition.
