New Forest March - Johnnie Vinson

Here is a terrific march for young players written in the traditional British style. The opening strains are folk-like in nature with underlying modal harmonies, while the stately trio is reminiscent of the processional style of Elgar and other British composers. The "New Forest" refers to a region in southern England established as a royal hunting preserve by William the Conqueror around the year 1079, which has remained largely unchanged since ancient times. Dur: 2:10 (Grade 2)

Illuminate - Wind Band (Andrew Wainwright)

Written for the Chicago Staff Band's tour of England in 2015, this exhilarating work was premiered at The Salvation Army's Boundless International Congress at London's O2 Arena to an audience of 20,000 people. It has since been arranged here for wind band. The piece is structured as a through-composed triptych, weaving together the popularcontemporary worship songs Shine on Us (Michael W. Smith) and Speak, O Lord (Keith and Kristin Getty) with the historic Salvationist anthem The World for God (Evangeline Booth) to explore themes of light, guidance, and mission. The work opens with energy and rhythmic drive, centering on Shine on Us. A stark contrast follows in the meditative middle section. Here, the music explores the contemplative depths of Speak, O Lord, featuring solo horn. The final section introduces a nostalgic and stirring reference to General Evangeline Booth's classic hymn, The World for God. The finale juxtaposes all three themes. As the disparate melodies intertwine and layer upon one another, the music builds to a triumphant climax - a representation of 'illumination' that celebrates a shared faith across generations. Sir Roger de Coverley - Frank Bridge

Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Lakeside Drawings - Score and Parts - Richard Phillips

Program NotesOnce a year, my wife and I like to visit the beautiful Lake District in the northwestern sector of England in the county of Cumbria. It has been a place of much inspiration for many composers over the years and when amidst the rolling countryside, the lofty mountain peaks, it is no wonder. Lakeside Drawings was started when I visited the Lakes and seeks to reflect the contours of the many mountain peaks through the sometimes soaring melodic lines of the composition. It is a piece based on tunes reflecting the aspect and also of the mindset of the many walkers who have scaled the mountains to achieve an ambition of reaching a summit. Once reached, a glorious view is a prize worth every hour of tiring ascent.-Richard Phillips
