Storm Surge is a musical representation of the devastating North Sea storm surge (in Dutch, Watersnoodramp) of 1953. The surge left 2551 dead, 1836 people from the Netherlands alone, together with fatalities in Scotland, England and West Flanders. Storm Surge starts off with calm waters, while we hear the steadily growing sounds of the wind and sea. A specially commissioned poem, written by Martin Westlake, spoken over these sounds, warns of the dangers of ignoring the storm. Slowly, the storm starts to take hold and the sea begins to swell. The violence of the storm then erupts, but before it reaches its climax, the Dutch National Anthem gives a sense of the calm in the eye of the storm. It then returns to the storm surge and depicts the sea breaking through and ravaging the coastline. Eventually the storm surge recedes until a lone trumpet is left quoting broken fragments of the Anthem. The work closes with a calm breeze mournfully revealing the devastation left behind by this natural disaster.

Traditionally performed by solo organ, Bach's Sinfonia from Cantata No. 29 is arranged here for flute choir, with the piccolo parts closely following how an organist would perform the music. This arrangement has interesting textural and dynamic contrast, despite few dynamic markings, which Long creates through thoughtful scoring of different flute parts playing in various registers of the flute range. This arrangement was premiered in July of 2009 by the New England Conservatory Summer Metropolitan Flute Festival Orchestra in the New England Conservatory's renowned Jordan Hall. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs, some of which were transcribed for the _x005F_x001F_first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures: the _x005F_x001F_sherman's song Dance to Your Daddy, the love song O Waly, Waly and Bobby Shafto, a song from the northwest of England.

Since Canterbury is the ancient religious centre of Great Britain the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England, has presided over the coronation ceremonies of rulers of England for many generations. Canterbury Coronation seeks to capture both the ancient solemnity and the spirit of celebration that is inherent in a coronation and its accompanying ceremonies.

Norfolk is one of the most beautiful counties in England, famous for its charming villages and boundless broads, a popular centre for sailing holidays. It is also the home of one of the best known of all British composers, Sir Malcolm Arnold. The date of the premiere of this piece was to fall close to his 80th birthday, so Philip Sparke decided to write something of a birthday tribute. Some of Arnold's best-loved orchestral works are his sets of dances: there are two sets of English Dances, Four Scottish Dances, Four Cornish Dances etc., most of which have been arranged for concert band at one time or another. Philip Sparke thought it would be appropriate for the concert band tohave its own set of dances and wrote Four Norfolk Dances very much in the style of Arnold's suites.

A brief history: Pentecost Monday was a special day for schools in Yorkshire (England). There were a variety of activities. The pupils of Sabine Baring-Gould would meet with the children of a nearby village. It seemed like a good idea that during the walk would be sung. But she could not find a suitable song and decided to write one by herself. "Onward Christian Soldiers" was the result. It soon became very popular, though she herself was not entirely satisfied with the rhyme scheme. The melody used (St. Gertrude) was by the famous English composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan. Back to now: Gawan Roberts, has given the hymn a proper update. He gave the still popularsong a solid rock beat and added daring harmonies. So it's popular, for current generations, again for years.
