Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus is a Concert Band arrangement from the original work for string orchestra and harp by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The composition is based on the folk tune Dives and Lazarus, one of the folk songs quoted in Vaughan Williams' English Folk Song Suite. The ancient theme on which these variations are based goes back to the sixteenth century, and is known by various titles. Dives and Lazarus is a story told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. It tells of an unnamed rich man and a poor beggar named Lazarus. In the Latin Bible, the unnamed rich man is referred to as Dives from dives, the Latin word for rich. This work, based on the tune that Vaughan Williams had loved all his life, which came from the very soil of England, ageless and anonymous, was played at the composer's funeral service in Westminster Abbey on 19th September 1958.

In Caledonia, Oliver Waespi adapted three well-known Scottish folk songs into a rhapsodic suite for wind orchestra. The first, rather humorous song, The Devil Came Fiddling Through the Town, tells the story of a devil who, as he passes through the streets of the town, catches the tax inspector and carries him off, much to the delight of the inhabitants. The second song, Ye banks and braes, is gentle and melancholy and based partly on the folk song Hey, tuttie tattie. Oliver Waespi took a symphonic approach to the adaptation of these lovely songs, which makes this a unique and innovative suite that can be performed at a concert or contest. Theindividual parts can also be performed separately.

The American state of Arkansas is often called 'the natural state' and 'the land of opportunity.' This piece belongs to Jacob de Haan's series of musical montages depicting various states in the USA, including Dakota, Oregon and Virginia. Arkansas is a suite in three movements based on a well-known native American folk song. It appears as a ballade, variations and finally accompanies a jazzy rhythm. 100 years ago English composer Vaughan Williams visited Norfolk (an area on the east coast of England) to collect and notate folk songs from people of all trades and callings. Accompanied by a local clergyman, he visited The Tilden Smith, a pub which was a favourite haunt of the 'Northenders', the local fishermen, and in less than a week the composer had notated 61 songs. Vaughan Williams incorporated the best of these songs into his own music, most notably in A Norfolk Rhapsody and the Sea Symphony. Philip Sparke has composed this new suite based on five of these folk songs together with King's Lynn, a folk song which Vaughan Williams adapted into a popular hymn tune. The Wayfaring Stranger
Based on the American folk song "Poor Wayfaring Stranger", this work for euphonium and band is a movement from "The American Folk Odyssey", a suite for various soloists and concert band. Beginning with a mysterious and lyrical statement of the haunting melody, the piece quickly transitions to the high seas in homage to the early Americans that journeyed by ship to the American continent. The sea chanty setting provides technically rich and effective environment to feature the euphonium with full band interaction while engaging the audience. Following a virtuosic cadenza, the movement concludes in a powerful musical flurry leaving the soloist, band and audience breathless!
