Somerset - James Swearingen
Somerset County, located in the state of Pennsylvania, is the inspiration for this overture. It is dedicated to the many residents who, over the past several years, have worked tirelessly to create a proper and fitting tribute to the heroes of Flight 93 that went down in a field on September 11, 2001. The music is meant to remind us that we should never forget the brave acts of those citizen soldiers who fought to protect our freedoms. Inspirational!

Purple Whispers - Richard L. Saucedo
This remarkable and descriptive work opens and closes with members of the ensemble whispering to one another, creating a soft yet chaotic effect. The simple poem is by the composer: Whispers move in colored flight, seeking signs of next twilight, purple as the violets grow, warm but rich for all to know. As the piece progresses, introduced by a solo piano, the listener is taken through a dynamic range of emotional tension and release before the quiet mood returns to close out this uniquely effective composition. Dur: 5:15 Recorded by the Marshall University Wind Symphony - Steve Barnett, conductor

The Soaring Falcon - John Prescott
The thrill and excitement of flight is vividly portrayed in this heralding work that uses all the colors and textures that concert band instrumentation offers. Large ensemble textures give way to dance-like figures in 7/8 time for a remarkable culmination of energy and explosiveness. The combination of rhythms, dynamics and sonority contribute to a powerful intensity that creates a stunning and triumphant work.

The Awakening - Mark Lortz
Highly programmatic and descriptive, this piece is based on three of Leonardo da Vinci's most well-known works. The first section, Vitruvian Man, is a striking musical representation of the human body and its proportions. Mona Lisa lyrically depicts the gentle and subtle beauty of this famous painting. Finally, The Flying Machine musically soars, reflecting Leonardo's fascination with flight.

One Thousand Cranes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sheldon, Robert
An ancient Japanese legend promises that folding 1,000 origami cranes will make your wish come true. If those cranes are folded in honour of someone, it shows that person is held in high esteem. The composition is an elegy that begins with a four-note theme. This motive is used in various ways throughout the piece as a unifying factor. Although its initial appearance is somewhat haunting, the motive becomes quite comforting by the end of the piece. References to cranes in flight are frequent and the use of pentatonic scales and tam-tam provides a nod to the music of Japan.Duration: 6.45

Lift Off (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Meechan, Peter
Lift Off! is a short suite of descriptive pieces, all inspired by a short flight from Manchester, England to Brussels. In the first movement we hear the engine start, and after the plane has moved into position, it takes off. The second movement depicts the beautiful view of the clouds from above. It all seems timeless and you don't even feel as if you are moving. The last movement starts nervously (I'm not a great flier!), as the plane begins its descent from the sky. However, as we land safely back on earth, the piece ends in a flurry of excitement and triumph, returning to a theme heard in the first movement.
