Northern Landscapes is scored for professional brass quintet and grade 3/4 wind band. The four movements provide musical mood pictures of various aspects of working life in Northern Ireland. 1) Industry opens the suite with the bustle of factory machinery, followed attacca by 2) Seascapes, which evokes the calmness of local waters during a fishing expedition. 3) Earth Dance references the mining industry where the blackness of the environment is mirrored by the darkness of the music. 4) Flight evokes the path of an aircraft on its maiden journey in this tribute to the aircraft industry.

Soaring!
Soaring is a mode of flight in which height is gained slowly by using air that is moving upwards. Written for music educator's Randy Heuvelman's 30 years of service to the Woodland (Illinois) School District, Soaring paints a music portrait of dedication, compassion and intensity, all aspects of this educator's tenure. A slower middle section alternating between choirs of woodwinds and brass paints a serene portrait with lush harmonies and soaring countermelodies. The extensive percussion scoring utilizes timbres that add and complement the completed musical setting. Soaring is truly one of David's best works

The inspiration for this piece came when the composer visited Florida and the Bird Sanctuary in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. He was in the audience to see the rare bird show where he witnessed some fabulous looking and endangered birds that were trained to perform different tricks that wowed the audience. The highlight for him was the conclusion of the show where the most awesome sight greeted us as an American Bald Eagle soared over the audience. That particular breed of Eagle has been a very rare bird of late. With so few in numbers, it nearly became a member of the sad group of animals that are extinct.The host of the show took great delight in informing the audience that the fantastic creature is now officially safe and no longer classed as endangered. This made a great impact on the composer as the Eagle is an amazing bird, huge in size and power and yet so graceful in flight. This piece is everything associated with the Eagle; bold, powerful and graceful and now free to soar and sing in the American homelands.Where Eagles Sing has been hugely successful as a curtain-raiser (or finale) with brass bands around the world and it is hoped that this version for concert band will be just as popular.Duration: 4.00

One of man's great dreams has always been to fly high through the air like a bird, free as a bird. There are ancient Greek legends such of those of Daedalus and Icarus, and indeed as early as the 9th century attempts at flight are reputed to have taken place in Arabia. It wasn't until 1783, however, that the invention of hot air ballooning by the Montgolfier brothers in France propelled man through the air for the first time. An ancient Japanese legend promises that folding 1,000 origami cranes will make your wish come true. If those cranes are folded in honour of someone, it shows that person is held in high esteem.The composition is an elegy that begins with a four-note theme. This motive is used in various ways throughout the piece as a unifying factor. Although its initial appearance is somewhat haunting, the motive becomes quite comforting by the end of the piece. References to cranes in flight are frequent and the use of pentatonic scales and tam-tam provides a nod to the music of Japan.Duration: 6.45
