Faber is the ancient Latin name that was used to designate artisans. The Suite, which is divided into three movements, pays tribute to them, in the hope that their activities will not completely disappear. The first movement (Maestoso) represents the carpenter who, after completing his creation admires it with satisfaction. The second movement (Adagio) describes the work of the tailor: the first part is more meditative and portrays the use of needle and thread, while the second, characterized by forceful rhythmic strettos, describes the ancient and complex use of the weighted loom. The last movement (Presto), characterized by irregular rhythms and constant changes of tempo, introduces us to a blacksmith's shop full of intense and loud metallic noises.

Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use and development of Norwegian folkmusic in his own compositions put the music of Norway in the international spectrum, as well as helping to develop a national identity. Grieg is regarded as simultaneously nationalistic and cosmopolitan in his orientation, for although born in Bergenand buried there, he traveled widely throughout Europe, and considered his music to express both the beauty of Norwegian rural life and the culture of Europe as awhole.1884 was the bicentenary year of the birth of Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754)and as a part of the celebrations various Scandinavian composers were commissioned to write commemorative pieces. From Holbergs Time was one of Griegs contributions. It was first written for piano but in 1885 the composer transcribed it for stringorchestra. For his suite Grieg went back to some of the musical forms used by Holbergs contemporaries but although the forms and style may be rococo the contents are unmistakably characteristic of Grieg himself. Grieg gave the first performance ofthe piano version in Bergen, Holbergs birthplace, in December 1884.

The 'suite Arogno' is a musical evocation of the history of this small village on the Alps, at the border with Italy. The first movement describes the travel of architect Adamo da Arogno to Trento where he will build the cathedral (13th century). The second movement celebrates the entry of Arogno into the Swiss Confederation in 1516. In the third movement you can hear the invasion of the Austrian troops in 1799. The fourth movement describes the complex move of a complete clock factory from the Jura Canton to Arogno in 1873 and the last movement evokes the arrival of the first postal car in 1925.

George Washington Suite - Mike Hannickel

GEORGE WASHINGTON SUITE is made up of three tunes known to have been composed for (or about) George and Martha Washington in their own time. Probably the best known of the three is the first movement, WASHINGTON'S GRAND MARCH, which is believed to have been written by Francis Hopkinson. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The second movement has the delightful title "Fancy Menuit with figure Dance by Two young Ladies in the presance of Mrs. Washington in 1792. Phila." sic (The quaint original spellings and capitalizations are preserved here for historical interest.) A fife-and-drum style arrangement of the BRANDYWINE QUICKSTEP completes this early American triptych.The stately and moderate tempos that fit the music of this era so well also ensure that the arrangements remain accessible to young bands. £121.00Little Masquerade Suite - Johan Halvorsen
In 1922 Halvorsen was commissioned to write incidental music for the bicentennial performance of a comedy written by Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Masquerade calls for a diverse pallet of music depicting ballet and dance scenes filled with silly play and gaiety. As a result, the music is graceful, as found in Cotillion, playful as in the Bacchanale, and burlesque for the Rooster and Grotesque dances. The original Masquerade Suite for orchestra consisted of eight dances; this arrangement for concert band comprises the first, third, fifth and sixth movements of Halvosens original suite. A delightful programing selection displaying humor, wit and elegance in the four brief movements.
