£104.99The Flood - Filip Ceunen
The Flood was commissioned by Music Society Maris Sonores from Biddinghuizen, the Netherlands, on the occasion of its 55th anniversary. In this colourful composition, the name of the society has been inventively woven into the music - Maris Sonores meaning sounds of the sea - by means of key clicks in the flutes and clarinets, wind effects in various brass and woodwind instruments along with timpani, as well as sound effects in the small percussion. In addition, the history of the town is also reflected musically. Many centuries ago, around the year 800, a hamlet by the name of Bidningahusum already existed; unfortunately, it fell victim to the water of the then Zuiderzee. Later, the catastrophic flood of 1170 dealt the final blow. In the 1960s, there was a call for pioneers to once more build a town carrying the name Biddinghuizen in the polder of Eastern Flevoland - and so it happened. This versatile work, which is available for concert band as well as fanfare band, has been written in such a way that many bands will be able to play it. Each instrument group comes out well, so that The Flood will be a joy for players and listeners alike.

Back on Track is a spectacular composition for Concert Band. Otto M. Schwarz composed an opening fanfare for the beginning, which can also be played as a short 'teaser' at festive events. Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close.

Symphonic Dimensions is a powerful opening piece with a continually recurring motif. Beginning with a festive fanfare in which the leitmotif is heard for the first time, it continues in a buoyant 12/8 meter. The themes alternate again and again, in various instrumentations, and end in an epic finale. Symphonic Dimensions can equally be played at the end of a concert as a rousing finale.

Fields of Deliberation was written by composer Kevin Houben for the 'Limburgs Fanfare Orkest'. The occasion was the concert cycle that appropriately commemorated the end of the Second World War (in 2020, 75 years ago).From the very first beginning till the end, speed, energy and 'drive' characterize this powerful composition. A magnificent lyrical melody is the common thread throughout the piece, without the rapid movement losing pace or intensity. Majestic, grand moments and energetic passages alternate culminating in an impressive highlight.This dynamic concert piece with a cinematic character is a challenge for all the different groups of instruments of the orchestra and is an added value for any concert program.

Carpe Diem was written for the Argyle Secondary School in Vancouver and premiered at the final senior band concert of 2016, with the composer conducting his peers. The work is intended to have fun parts for all of the band to play. From loud, brassy trombone parts to a triumphant fanfare of trumpets; from wind runs to percussion swells, the piece is very satisfying to perform. With the triumphant nature of the piece, the school's motto, Carpe Diem, was chosen as its title.

Kiskiminetas is a Native American word that means to make daylight and was likely a command given to break camp and continue the journey. Paul Murtha's escriptive work for young players opens with a noble fanfare suggesting the break of day. A lyric section follows depicting scenic vistas along the path, and finally an exuberant adventure theme celebrates the conclusion of the journey. Nicely paced with plenty of variety.

£139.99Centenary 2019 - Jan de Haan
Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. 'AwakeningVillage', the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. 'Bintje Monument' was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) whodeveloped the well-known potato variety called 'bintje'. The finale, 'Journey into the Unknown' refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of thefolksong and fragments from 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanizing rhythmical passages.
