£94.99Conzensus - Jan Van der Roost
This stately concert opener was originally written by Jan Van der Roost for a special event in which six respected wind orchestras (two Belgian and four Dutch) of different composition (two symphonic bands, two fanfare bands and two brass bands) were featured during six concerts. Each evening brought forth a performance by a symphonic band, a fanfare, and brass band, so that the audience could experience all three types of ensembles. This was indeed an original concept.The name, ConZEnSus, comes from a combination of the words, 'Concert Cyclus' (concert series) and 'zes' (Dutch for 'six'). This leads to a new word, which refers to 'consensus'. The general tenor of the cycle isthus immediately indicated. The richness of color of the various ensembles is revealed through an open and friendly atmosphere. During all six concerts (over a span of three years), ConZEnSus functioned as a permanent opening number for each orchestra. Thus the same musical story was portrayed in three different packages.

This work was commissioned to open the Scarlet and Gold Concert in 2015. The concert is given annually in London by the musicians of the Household Division (Guards) of the Army, renowned for the splendour of their uniforms. The piece is intentionally energetic, vivacious and brilliant in style, seeking to capture the sparkle of gold in the uniforms with a few strong and majestic seams of scarlet underpinning the texture. There are no specific military connotations in the music and the piece is a dynamic concert opener for any programme. In the original performance a fanfare team was added for dramatic effect but the piece is fully performable without fanfare trumpets.Duration: 5:00

To Those Who Dream: Fanfare and Processional is a stately ceremonial work from the pen of beloved composer Larry Daehn. Commissioned by the New Glarus, Wisc. High School Band, where the composer taught for many years, this piece is based on poems and essays written by band members. This fanfare and processional has drama, nobility, enthusiasm, and warmth, and could be performed at graduation events, memorial concerts, or at festival. Everybody picks their own dream! Festival Prelude 'Ad Excel' was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for 'to excel' but also celebrates the band's anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close. Duration: 5.00

Song of Friendship was commissioned by the Concert Band of Jumonji University, Saitama, Japan and their conductor, Yutaka Nishida. The commission marked the 50th year of Yutaka Nishida's involvement with bands as a player, conductor and radio presenter. The ceremonial Song of Friendship opens with an extended fanfare, largely featuring the brass section. This leads to the main theme, which develops slowly until it is played by the full band. A change of key signals a contrasting central section containing a quiet woodwind chorale, which grows until the return of the triumphant sounding main theme. Elements of the opening fanfare then close the work. Duration: 6.45

Second to None is a perfectly suitable title for this work, though it actually refers to "Nulli Secundus", the motto of the British Corps of Army Music, who gave the commission to Philip Sparke. The piece opens with a fanfare, followed by two short quotes from two of the Corp's own marches and a festive Vivace. A more legato central section creates a nice contrast before the work closes with the opening fanfare. A perfect affair!Duration: 6:45

A tuneful and reasonably easy suite, comprising Fanfare, Lullaby and All at Sixes and Sevens. There are some asymmetric rhythmic challenges in the last movement as implied in its title, but otherwise this suite is not particularly difficult and sets out to be attractive throughout. The Fanfare is vibrant and energetic while Lullaby is very lyrical and occasionally punctuated by harmonic piquancy. All at Sixes and Sevens plays games between 3/4 and 6/8 with some sevens thrown in for good measure.Duration: 8.45
