Allegro Spirito from Symphony No.2 (Brass Band) Borodin arr. Harold Burgmayer

Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony in B minor dates from the years 1869-76, a time when he was also working on his enduring opera Prince Igor. Flavors of the exotic and outdoor celebration seemed to have spilled over from the opera in this brilliant sonata movement. Borodin seldom quotes Russian folk tunes, but his graceful melodic lines are permeated with the spirit of his native song, supported by iridescent harmonies and bright colors. This arrangement for brass band was premired by The Salvation Army's New York Staff Band, with Ronald Waiksnoris conducting, at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on 11 April 2001. This complete transcription of the Finale movement of Borodin's Second Symphony has an approximate duration of 6.40 minutes. To alternatively utilize the piece as an opener, a cut from bar 173 to 272 is indicated with Coda signs, reducing the piece to 4.30 seconds. The Outer Planets (Brass Band) Joe Galuszka

The Outer Planets, by Joe Galuszka, was written in 2025 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the European Space Agency (ESA), and is scored for brass band and percussion. Inspired by ESA's mission to explore the furthest reaches of our Solar System and beyond, the piece is a sonic tribute to the gas giants, the icy worlds that follow, and the pioneering future of space exploration. Across three movements, the music reflects not only past and present achievements, but also the bold vision of ESA's continuing journey - particularly the potential of the James Webb Space Telescope and future missions to unlock secrets of the outer planets. The opening movement, Giants of Gas, explores the immense scale, swirling storms, and dynamic atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. With brass-driven energy and a sense of galactic momentum, the music captures their turbulent majesty and the awe they inspire. The second movement, Dance of the Ice Giants, focuses on Uranus and Neptune, the two icy planets. Cooler in tone and mood, this section evokes a sense of alien beauty - glacial, mysterious, and haunting. Here, we pause in quiet reflection on these distant worlds and the silent wonder they hold. The final movement, Beyond Poseidon, imagines a future ESA mission - perhaps robotic, perhaps crewed - launching into the uncharted space beyond Neptune, pressing against the boundaries of the Solar System. The music builds towards a sweeping, cinematic close, looking outward with ambition, curiosity, and the pioneering spirit that has defined ESA for half a century. The Outer Planets celebrates the science, vision, and courage of ESA - honouring what has already been discovered, and anticipating the extraordinary discoveries yet to come. Extinction:2100! (Brass Band) Joe Galuszka

Extinction:2100!, by Joe Galuszka, takes us on a journey to the present day and shows us the devastating impacts of climate change. With the world reaching crisis, we open with a reminder that the world has suffered in recent years from some of the most raging destruction of our plants and animal life, from wildfires. With the time left becoming smaller and smaller with each day passing, the piece reminds us next of the 'Tolling Bell of Extinction' before the conclusion takes us to a place all too familiar - the present - where with action and with a 'Call for Change', we can hopefully make a difference to our future, our children's future, and save our planet from devastation, from decimation, from extinction! The solos for cornet and euphonium may be played by saxophone soli cued in at bars 114 and 128. Parts that are marked piu mosso ed leggiero should be played in a cheerful light staccato style in contrast to Andante cantabile.

    Mondo Glissando - Mike Hannickel

Slip-slidin' trombone smears in this rip-snortin' ragtime setting are sure to tickle your ears and put some tap in your toes. The trombone glissando is the happiest sound around! Dedicated to, and premiered by, the Westchester Middle School Band of Westchester, Illinois, Mr. Jason Kluge, director, MONDO GLISSANDO targets that most critical of wind sections. When was the last time you featured your trombones? When was the last time they felt like STARS? Section feature pieces are one of the most important techniques available for keeping a section strong and well represented. MONDO GLISSANDO can even be used as a trombone SOLO piece, by having the non-solo trombones play from thetechnically simpler euphonium part.Either way, section or solo, there's nothing like an exposed part on an upcoming performance to reinvigorate a musician's interest and encourage that all-important PRACTICE!
