The original melody (known as Nicaea) was composed by John Bacchus Dykes' especially for Reginald Heber's renowned hymn of praise and became universally popular when it was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. Puccini's opera La Fanciulla del West is set in America's Wild West. The impressionistic-inspired opera separates this opera from most of Puccini's other works. The German composer Woldemar Bargiel was the half-brother of Clara Schumann and composed a significant amount of chamber music. He was supported by fellow composers Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. His Adagio, opus 38 for cello and orchestra is an eloquently beautiful solo work and makes a very attractive solo feature for euphonium with wind accompaniment. This setting was premiered with euphonium soloist Misa Meade accompanied by the Loyola University Concert Band.

Cantiphonia - Concerto For Euphonium - Bert Appermont
This spectacular three-part concerto (Contrasti, Romanza and Fugato) for euphonium and grand brass-band orchestra by Bert Appermont was composed upon request by the Swiss euphonium virtuoso Ueli Kipfer who created it in November 2004 with the Schweizer Armee Spiel conducted by Jan Cober. The composer was inspired more by its mood than the analysis of works by Mahler and Rachmaninov. This concerto, which is quite demanding for the soloist and a challenge for the orchestra, is probably one of the most innovative works by Bert Appermont to date. The three movement structure reflects a classical outlook concerning concertos. Traditionally, this design favours the listener, first in the head, then the heart and finally in the toes. In the first movement, the soloist combines clear strong phrases with gentle melismatic meandering as well as negotiating many acute-angled leaps which justify themselves by enharmonic changes beneath. The slow movement has a long main melody and contains the only cadenza element in the work: two pastoral passages, homage to the mysteriously beautiful Border Country. The finale opens with a driving, motoric introduction followed by a cheeky rondo theme. Repeated quotations of this are elaborated with increasingly intricate variations until an unaccompanied whole-tone version of the theme brings the work to a fast close.
