Spirited Away - Joe Hisaishi
This is an arrangement of Ghibli's Anime film, "Spirited Away". It consists of six themes including No-Face, One Summer Day, The Bottomless Pit, Yubaba's Panic, Always with Me, and Reprise. I also added an alternate introduction using The Dragon Boy. The No-Face opener is somewhat avant-garde with technical difficulties so select the opening that is best suited to your ensemble. The arrangement concept was created by Mr. Tomoki Ubata of Ina Gakuen Sr. High School. His wonderfully crafted ideas always impress me. Especially, in the arrangement, mallet percussion and piano are effectively used to sound like a music box and the lyrical melody of Reprise is superimposed. This scene is the best part of the entire arrangement and is very emotional. All these fine melodies from the film transport both audience and performers to the fantastic world of anime. This tumultuous composition tells the legend of the town of Zwolle in the Netherlands. In the waters surrounding Zwolle lived a dragon. When it appeared it threatened to destroy the town with it fiery breath if a human sacrifice was not offered. St Michael confronted the dragon in a battle without equal. As a knight armed with a double edged sword the archangel battled against the dragon and decapitated it. Thus the city was saved. To represent the archangel the composer has chosen the hymn tune Laudate Dominum . The dragon is symbolised by a series of menacing chords. 0:08:00

In 1911, the Australian pianist and composer (and friend of Edvard Grieg), Percy Grainger (1882-1961) went on a tour in Norway. He performed more than forty concerts over a few months. Fifty years later, in 2011, The Royal Norwegian Marine Band made a concert project called "Percy Grainger Revisited Tour". "Franarormen" is a worm or a dragon as described in norse medieval ballads. I have used four different tunes from the region Telemark were Fr?narormen is mentioned in the text. The piece is a musical reflection - not at all as drammatic as the text. It is like a picture of an old fairytale and a dwell on the sound of ancient songs. The piece can be performed without the piano part.
