The Maple Leaf Forever - Alexander Muir (1830-1906) / arr. David Marlatt

This rousing and patriotic song was written in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. It became very popular and, for many years, was the unofficial national anthem of Canada. The piece opens with a snare drum and gradually introduces the theme in the altos and flutes, while the trumpets play bugle calls that are echoed by the clarinets. This introduction could serve as an opportunity for the choir to "march" into position and be ready for the chorus that appears at the key change. This arrangement is part of a collection for young band celebrating Canada's 150th anniversary since joining Confederation.

    Concord Fanfare - David Marlatt

This is a short energetic piece which contains all the expected elements you may expect with a fanfare. Running scale passages in the upper woodwinds, driving percussion parts and fanfares in the brass. This would be a great way to open a concert or at a special event. The lower voices get some great scale runs which help to drive the piece and give them something interesting to play.

Canon - Johann Pachelbel / arr. David Marlatt

Canon by Johann Pachelbel is one of the most famous and recognizable pieces of classical music. The treatment of the melody in this arrangement follows a popular Baroque tradition, the concerto grosso. This technique utilizes a small group of soloists that were supported by the remainder of the ensemble. In this arrangement, the solo instruments are 2 flutes and 2 clarinets which have the majority of the technically scalar passages as well as the lyrical melody line. The "chamber sound" created by this arrangement is a welcome variation from the tutti sound that is commonly found in concert band writing.

This piece is heroic and noble with many "characters" found along the way. Each section represents a new person, foe, or obstacle that the hero must face. The Golden Age - David Marlatt

The Golden Age is a piece written in the carefree style of the music written in North America at the turn of the 20th Century. The concerts in band shells throughout Canada and the United States contained such popular compositional types such as: theme and variations, orchestral transcriptions, waltzes, overtures, rags and marches. This four movement suite takes a typical concert at that time, and puts it all in a single, multi-movement work.
