Rondeau - Jean Joseph Mouret / arr. David Marlatt

This Rondeau by Jean Joseph Mouret is recognized today as the opening theme song to Masterpiece Theatre. This famous trumpet solo features the first trumpet section in the band. Alternating sections between brass choir (plus some covering parts) and the complete band make this piece a fun one to play. Rondeau is an audience favourite and this stately piece is sure to be known by all. With typical Baroque articulations and sudden dynamic contrasts, this piece is excellent for not only featuring a section, but working on tight ensemble playing.

Concerto in D, Opus 7, No. 6 - Tomaso Albinoni / arr. David Marlatt

This three-movement , somewhat reminiscent of Handel in character, was originally for oboe, strings, and continuo. Solo parts have been provided to feature either oboe, clarinet (in B-flat or A), or piccolo trumpet in A. The rich, full sound of a band accompaniment is a large step away from the original strings but is suitable and striking in its contrast with the support sound under the soloist. (6:55)

Entrance of the Shogun - David Marlatt

In ancient Japan, the shogun were the military commanders appointed by the emperor. Grand and regal, when a shogun appeared to the public, there was a sense of awe and power at this warrior leader. Flanked by armies of samurai warriors, their power was obvious and their respect was demanded. This clever piece for very young band uses only the 5 notes used in a pentatonic scale (like playing just the black keys on the piano). This gives this beginning band piece a true Asian sonority. The Gypsies - Johann Friedrich Burgmüller / arr. David Marlatt

This popular piano solo has now been adapted for the concert band. It is a character piece depicting the mysterious nature of gypsies on their travels. The mysteriousness of the work makes it an excellent choice for a concert band around Halloween time. All sections of the band play a portion of the melody but none are too difficult. There are huge dynamic contrasts and contrasting melodic material that keep this short piece interesting and unique.

Egmont Overture - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. David Marlatt

This piece requires little introduction. Beethoven's most famous overture was arranged and published for band by Carl Fischer years ago. This new arrangement features new scoring and an oversized complete score. The horns and cornets are given more significant parts then the previous arrangement and the alto saxophones are also given some solo lines. This is a tour de force that would impress an adjudicator and dazzle audiences.

Final Alla Schumann, Opus 83 - Felix Alexandre Guilmant / arr. David Marlatt

This brilliant fanfare piece, written by the French organ giant Alexandre Guilmant, was written for both organ and orchestra and organ alone. No one knows which version came first but both have enjoyed popularity by players and audiences. Powerful and colorful, this work lends itself very well to concert band. (3:40)

Gypsy Rondo - Joseph Haydn / arr. David Marlatt

Haydn is best known for his symphonies but his chamber music is also excellent. He wrote several piano trios and the best known of these is the G major trio with its so-called "Gypsy Rondo." The fun technical lines, originally in the piano and violin, are split among the brass quintet. The band parts are very light and straightforward which allows for some rest on a long concert.
