    Celtic Fantasy - Keiichi Kurokawa

"Celtic" is a widely used term. Its history and culture expands to modern day Spain, Portugal, and North America. However, in this piece, I have based my music on the typical "Celtic" areas of Ireland and Scotland. The Bagpipe drone at the beginning reappears several times. After the introduction, the music transitions to an Irish Reel, The Wind That Shakes The Barley. Reel is a fast tempo dance, often in 4/4 or 2/2 time.Next is the Scottish folksong Auld Lang Syne, known as "Hotaru no Hikari" in Japan. The third movement is called Scotland the Brave. It is often performed by military bagpipe ensembles. Once air is blown into the bag, there is a constant reservoir of sound for Great Highland Bagpipes.A Part (advanced) is a grade 2.5-3 in American grading system. B Part (beginner) is 1-1.5.B Part is accessible for elementary school and junior high school beginning band students in Japan. However, the drone-sounding sections require a certain technique to hold the sound steady. It is my sincere desire that beginning musicians understand the importance of fundamentals through performing good music.Keiichi Kurokawa

Little Masquerade Suite - Johan Halvorsen

In 1922 Halvorsen was commissioned to write incidental music for the bicentennial performance of a comedy written by Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Masquerade calls for a diverse pallet of music depicting ballet and dance scenes filled with silly play and gaiety. As a result, the music is graceful, as found in Cotillion, playful as in the Bacchanale, and burlesque for the Rooster and Grotesque dances. The original Masquerade Suite for orchestra consisted of eight dances; this arrangement for concert band comprises the first, third, fifth and sixth movements of Halvosens original suite. A delightful programing selection displaying humor, wit and elegance in the four brief movements.

    Jig - Gustav Holst

Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band.

Scherzo from Symphony No. 5 - Dmitri Shostakovich

The second movement of Shostakovich's masterful and subversive Fifth Symphony, written as his career as a composer in communist Russia teetered in the balance, could suggest a barely literate composer from the Bureau of Artists coming to the great Shostakovich to demonstrate, through a most grotesque dance, how simple it is to compose great music under the Soviet System. This transcription of the Scherzo movement was produced by Mark Rogers, who also transcribed the complete symphony. In the transcription of the complete work, all of the music remains in the original key, while in this publication, the second movement is transposed down a whole tone to G minor. Other than the transposition and the removal of some of the more rarely found instruments (E flat clarinet, contrabassoon and harp), the music is intact, and represents the composer's intentions in every way. Conductors who choose to perform this piece will introduce their players to this important voice in Twentieth Century music and bring major issues about political life and its impact on creative life to their students in the most relevant fashion.

    Nonantum Bulgar - Hankus Netsky

Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. Learn more on YouTube! BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Two Norwegian Folk Tunes - Edvard Grieg

The melodies, harmonies, moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, op. 17.

    Dances Fantastique

This exciting new work for concert band is a set of three delightful dances. Opening with a bold fanfare statement, the first dance reveals the melodic material that is the basis for all three movements. The title of this movement, Double Dance, is derived from the second statement of the melody, appearing in doubled rhythmic values. The second movement, Round Dance, the melody is written as a three part round. You could not have a Round Dance without a Square Dance, which is the title of final movement. Lots of fun percussion instruments add interesting timbres throughout. This interesting and clever composition is perfect for contest and festival.

New World Dances (Concert Band - Score only) - Ellerby, Martin

Cast in three short movements the work endeavours to recreate the pioneering spirit of the journey across America (the then 'New World') as this vast continent was opened up and its wonders exposed. The three dance episodes that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this 'reaching' principle: the first - Earth Dance - is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude - Moon Dance - contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. Written in affectionate tribute to America and its people, New World Dances was rather symbolically completed on July 4th!Grade 6Performance time 8'45"Recorded on QPRM134D The Kings Go Forth, Central Band of the Royal Air Force
