Partita Piccola - Henk van Belcum
As the title suggests, this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries, especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer Knig as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Hndel's Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

George Washington Suite - Mike Hannickel
History! Introduce a bit of good old early-Americana to your audiences this year. GEORGE WASHINGTON SUITE is made up of three tunes known to have been composed for (or about) George and Martha Washington in their own time. Probably the best known of the three is the first movement, WASHINGTON'S GRAND MARCH, which is believed to have been written by Francis Hopkinson. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The second movement has the delightful title "Fancy Menuit with figure Dance by Two young Ladies in the presance of Mrs. Washington in 1792. Phila." sic (The quaint original spellings and capitalizations are preserved here for historical interest.) A fife-and-drum style arrangement of the BRANDYWINE QUICKSTEP completes this early American triptych.The stately and moderate tempos that fit the music of this era so well also ensure that the arrangements remain accessible to young bands. Hoe Down -from Rodeo - Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) has been called the Dean of American Composers. He was one of the first composers to use American folk idioms in his music. Hoe Down is taken from the ballad Rodeo, composed in 1942. From the ballet,Copland extracted Four Dance Episodes to form an orchestral suite for the concert hall: Buckaroo Holiday, Coral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and Hoe Down. Hoe Down uses the square-dance tunes of Bonaparte and McLeod's Reel.Polyrhtyhms are derived from the jazz idiom - thus, making the work light, humorous, and full of zest. (3:00)

The medley Grieg Highlights uses three of his well-known works: The Piano Concerto in A-minor, Morning Music from Peer Gynt and Norwegian Dance no. 2 from opus 35.

Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

Tock is a single movement work for concert band that uses percussion and asymmetrical rhythms to mimic the "tocking" of a broken clock. The repetition of melodies and of motive fragments are used to establish a regular pulse; however, while this pulse is steady, it is not even. A five-four time signature, a syncopated bass line and irregular phrases are all used to offset the central beat of the music. Much like the clock, the end result is a dance that seems consistent but is in fact "broken." Its a work that is both fascinating and creative, excellent cutting-edge writing for upper-level ensembles.

Dark Prophecy begins in an intense, agitated manner that projects ominous portents of danger. It then transforms into an urgent dance, this time with the original melody played in a savage manner, before settling into a calm, more reflective mood. At this point, long soaring melodies take over, dominating throughout and leading to a moment of triumph at the conclusion of the section. This feeling is short-lived - the music takes a violent turn with the reappearance of the original thematic material. The piece then pushes to a fearsome conclusion that seems to pose the question, "Has the prophecy been fulfilled?"

This piece is based on a Scottish folk song thought to have originated in the Hebrides. Common people in Scotland and Ireland would burn dried peat from the bogs for their hearth fires and gather around to tell tales and dance. The music tells in part of a journey, beginning with a somber and somewhat melancholy melody. It soon takes on a more upbeat feel as the tempo picks up and the mood becomes more uplifting and lively. It presses on to a spirited and bright ending.

Nikola Tesla was one of historys greatest inventors. Teslas Dream begins with a soft, contemplative flute solo, backed by gentle mallet percussion as though we are witness to his "lucid dreaming," which he believed was the source of his most creative ideas. This theme is repeated, growing to a full ensemble impact which represents the moment of creation and inspiration coming to fruition. The music then becomes faster, with strong Eastern European overtones that reflect his Serbian heritage. The initial tranquil flute melody gradually transforms into a frenetic dance, symbolizing Teslas many wide-swinging moods and colorful eccentricities.
