£186.20Arachne - Werner van Cleemput
ARACHNE won the 1983 Le Havre Wind Composition Contest (France). It was premiered by the Le Havre Municipal Symphonic Band, conducted by Claude Decugis.ARACHNE is a mythological character, who was an expert in weaving. The nymphs, daughters of Zeus, pay her a visit and Arachne boasts that she could even win from the goddess Athena at a weaving contest. Disguised as an old woman, Athena, also pays a visit to Arachne, who maintains the challenge. After a severe warning, Athene takes off her disguise and accepts the challenge. They both set to work quite zealously and the resulting tapestries are both of a rare splendour. But in her work Arachne lacked respect for the gods and Athene rages. She condemns Arachne to continue to weave forever as ... a spider.

£214.80Figures Sonores - Henk Badings
Figures Sonores was composed in 1984 at the request of the World Music Contest Kerkrade. It was used as test piece in the 'concert division' at the 1985 contest. The board of the WMC asked Badings to write a new type of test piece, stressing the musical contents and its delivery rather than technical difficulties. Moreover the composition was not to exceed a duration of ten minutes. The latter really disturbed the composer as he felt he could not really develop completely his musical ideas. The three parts are played without any interruption. The lyrical, pathetical first part is followed by a solemn middle part in which the percussion has a preponderant role, and a virtuoso and whimsical finale concludes the work. According to the commission the musical expression dominates in all solo passages, that occur in all instrumental groups.

£129.99And Then the Ocean Glows - Johann Strauss
And Then the Ocean Glows was commissioned by Niihama Grade School and its director, Mr. Shinichi Tagawa and completed in April of 2002. Mr. Tagawa and I titled the piece together, drawing from sectional themes of "Shining Morning Ocean", "Wind Stormy Ocean" and "Large Mother Ocean." Before I began composing the piece, I visited Niihama's rehearsal and met the band's inspired young students. The work's theme and melodies are enjoyable and compelling for musicians; I would be delighted for bands to experience this fresh composition.Niihama Grade School Band performed this work for the All Japan Band Contest in 2002 and advanced to divisional level to receive a gold prize. The band also appeared in the TBS Children's Music Contest and received a first prize. (Satoshi Yagisawa)

£116.40Meistersinger von Nurnberg - Richard Wagner
In 1867 Richard Wagner completed his only comic opera 'Die Meistersnger von Nrnberg' (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) for which he himself had written the libretto, based on the 'Nuremberg Chronicles' from 1697 by Johann Christoph Wagenseil. The plot is partly historical, partly romantic and partly satirical. The prelude is based on some of the main themes of the opera; it starts with the impressive martial processional theme of the Mastersingers and also boasts a passionate love theme as well as the famous contest song which the hero, Walter, has to sing in order to win both the contest and his beloved Eva's hand. Willem Steijn wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band.

American Emblem - Bill Calhoun
This new piece from composer Bill Calhoun is a distinctly American work for concert band that has potential as a concert or contest piece or as patriotic tribute to our great land. Starting with an open sounding fanfare, the piece leads to a truly American style melodic figure before developing variations on Yankee Doodle in ways reminiscent of other great American composers. This is followed by a heartfelt middle section, leading to a stunning climax with the opening material returning for an upbeat conclusion. This will make you band sound wonderful for concert or contest.

£106.99Sambezi - Philip Sparke
Sambezi is the last movement of Philip Sparke's Trombone Concerto. It starts in a joyful and outgoing mood with the soloist playing a carefree samba tune. A jazz-influenced central tune explores the higher ranges of the trombone before the samba rhythms set up a 'contest' between the soloist and the band's trombone section. The soloist is the eventual 'winner' and he celebrates by reintroducing the samba melody before bringing the work to a virtuosic close. A real treat for your trombone soloist.

£187.00Metamorphosis of Narcissus - Simone Sangiacomo
Metamorphosis of Narcissus, a powerful symphonic poem by young Italian composer Simone Sangiacomo, is inspired by Salvador Dal's surrealist painting. The piece takes the audience on a journey through fragmented rhythms and dissonant harmonies. From the dark, mythical landscapes to the iconic petrified hand holding a cracked egg, the music blurs the lines between illusion and reality. The piece employs innovative sonic techniques to illustrate the metamorphosis and fusion between the human being and his own reflection. Metamorphosis of Narcissuspresents itself as a profound meditation on the boundaries between self-perception, decline, and transformation. In 2024, Metamorphosis of Narcissus won the second prize at the "Winds Composition Contest Saxony" in Dresden, Germany.
